I buy from a broker. I don't buy or sell often enough for the fees to matter much to me.
Buy and hold is my motto. I have bought a few individual stocks in the past. These days, I don't. I buy index mutual funds in various asset classes. Index mutual funds have a very low fee/cost compared to the actively managed funds. Especially if you use Vanguard and their funds. Mutual funds allow me to own far more stocks than I would own if I were trying to buy individual companies' stocks which allows me to own a much more diverse portfolio than if I was buying individual stocks. I like the protection that offers. I don't have to worry about a single stock taking a dive.
