Yes, it was very possible when I was 18 and my 914 didn't have a center console.
The car saw quite a bit of use in that way. The funny thing was after the 914 I bought a chebby "surfer"van with all the carpet and panneling inside but the van almost never got used in that way, certainly not as much as the 914. Go figure
