Protecting wheels with a damaged clearcoat finish
I've put this in OT since the question pertains to one of my regular cars, not my 911. If this should better be put in the Technical section, let me know and I'll move it.
Doing a brake job on it this weekend reminded me that ny Accord has damaged clearcoat on a couple of the wheels. These wheels have a machined finish on the lip and spoke faces and paint in the recesses, with a clear coat over all of it. The clear coat has flaked off in places, and there is a little bit of durface corrosion from winter driving. (I don't drive a lot, even in winter, but it has seen a few winters of light use). This is not a car I am going to spend money to have the wheels refinished on, but I'd like to at least keep it from getting worse. How can I *effectively* either refinish or otherwise protect these exposed areas? I am not convinced that my cleaning and spot-refinishing the bad areas is going to last very long, but perhaps it's that or nothing.
