+1 on appointment!
However... I also let my licence lag too long... I tried to go online but it was too late, appointments were two months out and I need to renew that month (I know, I'm a wuss, should have made a appointment and just drove with an expired licence for a month).
Anyway... come to find out the DMV website has listings for every office giving wait times. After studying every wait time for every office in southern Calif. I just bit the bullet and went down to my local office and camped out at 7AM on the sidewalk with about 20 people... as it got closer to 8AM the line went around the building. 8AM the doors open, I file in and take my number. Get called, do my paperwork, take my bad picture, I was out of there by 9AM.
When the doors opened at 8 there were maybe 6-8 people in the reservation/appointment line.
