Replaced alternator, big improvement

FYI folks, I had noticed my alternator had started charging around 13.6volts +/-, and dropped with lights and heater on, etc., so I and went ahead and put in a replacement while I plan to have the original rebuilt for future use if needed. Voltage is now strong at 14.4 plus/minus now and I have to say I am noticing much smoother idle, better take off, better cold idle, all around snappier.

Just a note in case you are noticing perhaps less sharpness with the way your engine is performing.

FWIW swapping the alternator is easier than changing the spark plugs, imho.

Have a great day, everyone!
Emery

With all the junk electronic parts out there now I'd be very afraid to replace my alternator. Guess you're the current Guinea pig (no pun intended). What brand is the new unit and where did you purchase it?

I fitted the 175 amp Classic Retrofit alternator (because ElectroCooler). Alternator kit from CR comes with #4 gauge power/ground cables. I spent longer dealing with the cable replacement than any other part of the install...

The alternator is a current generation Denso "hairpin" alternator (google it), power rating is apparently limited by the fan belt, rather than the alternator. With the Clewett belt drive, might even make more.

Motec logs ECU voltage as 14.5V now, instead of 14.1V previously with the Bosch. Obviously, that's the regulator rather than the alternator.

A little bit of googling indicates that this is probably a small-case (128.5mm stator) Denso with the higher-output (130-160A) stator; cold rating 190A, hot rating of 160A. All day long.

Bit different to the 75A unit I took out - oil pressure gauge no longer ticks down when I switch on the lights - which also noticeably brighter....

It is a Bosch rebuild from Pelican...I did discuss with them prior to purchase. We'll see... I will have my original rebuilt locally and keep on shelf for insurance.

The 75A I took out was a Bosch remanufactured unit from Bosch - replacing the original Valeo which had a voltage regulator fail & boil the battery.

Only issue with the Bosch after 5 years/~30,000 miles was the output rating.
