86 930 Coil Options

Hi All,
It looks like I may have an ignition coil failure which left me stranded yesterday. No spark, I have a audible whine from my Bosch cd box and I have bypassed the yellow relay for testing. I haven’t checked the wire from the distributor to the cd box, but visually it looks to be ok. If it does happen to be a coil failure, what is a compatible replacement? I’ve seen people use the msd blaster coil, I also have access to a Permatune coil. Is one better suited than the other? I would use the stock Bosch cd box. I think the Permatune coil is a little longer than the old stock Bosch coil. Any recommendations appreciated.

One option is the coil made by P a r t s k l a s s i k (designed and made by them when it became clear that the new, Bosch coils are absolute junk and both Bosch and Porsche do not care). It performs very well and even looks like an original coil (if that matters).

I can't get links to their website to work, but if you google their name, you'll get there.

I’ve read all the bad reviews on the Brazilian Bosch coils. Definitely don’t want to take a chance. Nothing worse than driving along and the engine shuts down. Need to get something reliable and proven. I haven’t heard much about the Partsklassic coil. Seen some builds using MSD coils but can’t remember if they were using an MSD box as well, or a Bosch unit. Will need something compatible with the Bosch.

Some years ago the Permatune coil had the correct impedance for the original Bosch ignition and the Permatune replacement ignition. I don't think the MSD was correct for those iginiton boxes, the MSD coils were made for MSD ignition units. The impedance is different and sometimes things will work for a little while and then quit.

If the cois impedance or resistance is too low for the ignition unit the ignition unit will over heat and eventually burn out.

We have used the Partsklassic with success on some of our air cooled engines. Appears well made.

You need to make sure the coil is made for CDI use. If originality is not required we use another coil in our CDI kits that is a well made and reliable alternative. Both types are in stock if you need.
