Is this a catalytic converter

I have a 1979 930. Can anybody tell me if this is a catalytic converter or just a muffler?

If it is a 1979, that would still have the thermal reactors, which look something like heat exchangers, but are log-shaped (see below). That looks like the Euro exhaust with heat exchangers.

I believe the 1979 930 is a "Non Catalyst" model.

I don't mean to be rude or too critical....but....you have that limited a level of general car knowledge that you have to ask this question...and you bought a 930?? Really?

I suppose we all have to learn somewhere, sometime....but wow!

Thanks for a really helpful comment. A catelytic converter in a 930 doesn't look quite same that any other more modern car. Before I fill it up with oil with high zddp level I want to know this for sure. I buy want I want, and I fix the things I can do myself(that seems to be much more than you could imagine). The things I can't do myself I let others do.

There are no dumb questions. Keep asking all you want.

Some 930’s came with the thermal reactors pictured. Most all of them have been removed by now and replaced with a short header or full euro exhaust. The picture it not clear enough to see what you have.

The enclosure you see it the heat exchanger for your heater. The engine fan blows air through them via the 2” tubes and the hot exhaust pipes heat the air as it travels to the cabin area.

Thank you Much of it is similar technical to my 59 Beetle, but its newer and more modern. Got it in september and drove it 100km before the snow came (northern part of Norway) so I'm quite new with this. Can take some more pics to be sure. But it says non catalys inside drivers door so I dont thinkit has

If you have a catalytic converter it would be in line right before the muffler. It would be a long thin tube the darker one in the picture

A euro 930 would definitely be a non catalyst car.

The heat exchanger exiting under the transmission tells you this car has no thermo reactors. Engines with reactors exit at the front of the engine with a Y-pipe, non-thormo (Euro style) exit rear into a J-pipe.
Last picture shows Euro muffler, no catalytic converter.

Not necessarily. Your car is nearly 40 years old, a lot can be changed out by multiple owners in that amount of time.

I found a couple of pictures that show the difference between the 1978-1979 Euro exhaust that is on your car (TOP) and the later USA cat/muffler combo that appeared from 1986-1989 (BOTTOM). Both of these systems use the J-pipe heat exchangers.

Almost everyone removes the thermal reactors. They tended to keep a LOT of heat right by the heads with very negative results.
