911 Turbo conversion: Turbo return line filter?
1987 911 3.2 turbo lo-boost conversion, with TurboWerx electric scavenge pump.
Been reading that coke chunks can fly from the turbo and go into the return line and into sump drain. Any thoughts about an in-line mesh filter? There's a -8AN 150u mesh filter on EBAY ( See pic. 150u too big? Or how about a catch can with a filter inside - screw-in cannister with filter element? It's worth doing something. That oil should be filtered before heading into the engine.
I install a XRP space saver inline filter in the return line with a 10 micron screen. It was too small and restricted the oil flow too much. The pressure caused leaks. I call XRP and switched to a 40 micron and it has worked just fine. I have no idea what 150u equates to in microns. But $9.00 Lunch costs more. Get something better. Page 46. (150u is my way of saying 150 microns) Have you had to empty the filter yet? Don't know how much particulate a turbo would produce. Wonder about a cannister with removeable element might act as a catch can as well as large capacity filter? |

I made 2 years ago the same conversion with 3.6 and i use TurboWerx electric scavenge pump in the car since the engine is 1990 N/A i had to use the electric pump - however there is a problem i had damage 3 turbo on the way in the past 2 years all the turbo had major leaks of oil in to the inlet - the turbo oil seals where damage - the bearings and the shaft is fine only the seals - my turbo repair guy told me it only because of the pump he says that it is too strong and in idle it sucks all the oil, from the shaft and there for the seals are damage and breached out . it is possible ? is he right ? can you help me and take me a picture from car regarding the oil return to the engine with the pump. any help will be appreciate. thank you |

this is why a syn oil with a little less zinc than a dyno oil is much better for your engine. shutting down a very hot engine is very bad as he said. the bad thing about that filter is if it gets clogged your turbo is toast, although better than the engine. you want the oil to goto the sump, then it gets filtered. one mod is to reroute the outlet of the scavenge pump into the top of the breather cover, the other is directly into the sump through the drain plug. |

I'm trying to imagine the oil possibly taking a direct route from the feeder line directly to the bearings, then without covering the bearing, going directly to the return line? Wish I knew. However, many Pelicaners have used the TurboWerx scavenge pump, and I can't recall see ing them complain about a similar problem -- ALTHOUGH it is possible that they did not think of this as a cause of their turbo failure? Dunno. |
I had a similar issue Moty described when I had the pump connected directly to the drain without a reservoir. I ended up making a reservoir with an atmospheric vent to my intake piping and the problem went away (you can see in this photo here, the grey canister):

The filter is stainless and has a magnet element in it to catch any metallic debris that may pass through it. |

you know thw stock turbo sump has a strainer in it. I dont understand why none of the replacement sumps manufactured for headers dont also contain one.
