3.2 Carrera Turbocharging Rear Engine Tin

Hey, what's best? Modify the 3.2C or buy a 930 piece? Not sure if the amount of work fabricating the 3.2 versus the cost of the 930 item. Also not sure if the 930 item won't need modifying anyhow.

My set up will be a GT3582R turbo and there will be an intake pipe and a charge pipe going to an intercooler. Have not worked out the detail of that yet.

Thanks in advance.

yeah but I got to fill in the old heater air pipe and the 930 tin has a raised area above the turbo that the 3.2C doesn't have. I'm happy to tinker but not if the end result is not right or the real cost once you've mucked around with it is higher than buying the right part in the first place. Any more details?

Honestly I have nothing more to offer! The tin is an annoying obstacle, but its just tin afterall...
If you can find the 930 parts, do it. If not, the struggle isn't real! You can slice and dice Carrera tin all day to achieve the end result.

I was able to find a NOS 930 tin. it was a little pricey though, around $400 from what I remember.
there is a really janky one on ebay right now and a brand new one.

Either way you are probably going to have to make some modifications.

Personally, I like to start out with the sheet metal from the 3.2. You are probably going to use EFI, and the 3.2 parts accommodate the cylinder temperature sensor very nicely.

If you are going the 930 scavenge pump route, making the the hole for the pump is a fairly straightforward job with a hole saw.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think based on this feedback and some other thinking I've done I'm better off modifying my 3.2 tin. Cheers.

So, where does the intake come through the tin? Are you just attaching a filter directly to the turbo?

I have the intake routed into the rear fender on the driver's side.

Not great photos but you can see where it is headed:

Interesting routing of the intake which would certainly neaten up the engine bay and make the tin penetrations simpler. The guy who's assisting me with my conversion runs his air filter straight off the turbo which I'm sure is not best practice but once on the move it probably gets lots of fresh air I'd have thought. Also be interesting to see how that routing would package with heat and the SCAT pipe coming down through that area.

Hey Jayson,

What CAT is that you are running right after the turbo? Guessing its a cat not a Resonator? Need to come up with a temp solution to getting my car to pass smog, and was looking at some Magnaflow stuff. And then is that a Resonator after the cat on the reverse end of the U-Bend? Thanks in advance!

Ben,

It’s a Vibrant GESI Catalytic Converter, 3”. Super compact and extremely effective and designed specifically for forced induction applications with extreme EGT's. The substrate is made from stainless steel and coated rather than ceramic. They use these types of cats on rally applications with copious amounts of anit-lag:

After the u-bend is a 3” Vibrant bottle resonator, the shorter of their two offerings, 12” long. They have a longer 18” one but space was at a premium under there:
