Euro vs ROW

Anyone know what the difference is between the 2? I had heard they did things different with the engine on the 3.3.

Rest of World (ROW) is a Porsche chassis number term whereas "Euro" is sometimes used to describe grey market 930's.

For the 930, ROW VINs usually included all countires (not just Europe - "Euro") outside the USA with Japan being an exception in 1978 and 1979 when they had chassis numbers outside of the ROW series.

There are several variations on this theme, all ROW cars are not created exactly equal.
Canadian delivered ROW cars have differences from European ROW versions, Japanese ROW versions differ once again. Others with greater insight will chim in I'm sure.

US market cars differ for ROW cars through different fuel heads, lower HP rating, exhaust systems, pollution systems, lack of front fender side markers, and lack of rear fog light, include side impact bars in the doors, factory set ride height, mph speedo's vs. kilometeres and probably more, but these are what I can remember right now.

For clarification - fuel heads were the same for '78/79 ROW & U.S. 930's and fog lights were options for '78/79 ROW 930's. Front fender side markers were equipped on ROW 930's for the 1981-1989 model year.

I own a Canadian 81 930 no side marker lights. Think that was a Euro thing.

I was told they have more power , there were polished engine components, exhaust was better flowing.
Also the side markers, the rear fog lights, & the wiring in the headlights for the city lights.

UK requirement from 1986. From http://mottesters.co.uk/files/special%20notices/MOT%20Inspection%20Manual.pdf:

Quote:
Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must be fitted with one side repeater indicator on each side. Instead of a separate lamp, the side repeater might be part of the front direction indicator if it includes a wraparound lens.
Think most other Euro countries followed suit around the same time; in the UK, single rear fog became mandatory in 1980, rear seat belts in 1987. But I only needed to know that to prove I didn't need 'em for an MOT on a '77...

RoW distributors and injectors have different part #'s to US, and different timing specs/advance curve, in addition to the exhaust system (non-cat, better H/Es - same as late US) being different on the early cars.

Also, US and California motor types (and distributor model/ignition timings) were separate and distinct around 78-79 ish.

Late US fuel heads were different, but at least you got the reasonable headers, even if you were still stuck with the cat.

Only what I know. My Canadian 81 has euro fuel head, no side marker lights, no rear fog light. Euro exhaust no cat.. In km's. Rear seat belts. Front driving lights.
Euro ride height was stock.
Willing to help if I can. I have paperwork since sold new in 1981.

Engine internals are the same ROW to US, no polishing etc. The exhaust headers on Euro models flowed a lot better on early cars as the US models had thermal reactors.

The engine type number will give a clue but is not specific to every single country. Emission equipment is region specific such as California or Japan. Concourse and registry geeks should know more clues.

As far as I can tell the biggest differences between the lot of them are emissions related pieces.

Air pumps, different timing to get catalytic converters hotter, pierburg switches based on temperature to allow/prevent advance/retard.

With the lambda head being of course emissions based.

They are not side marker lights on the fenders but turn signal repeaters.

Early 3.3 RoW 930 exhaust made some 40 + HP over the early US 930 exhaust.

US 78/79 930 260 HP

RoW 78/79 930 300 HP

RoW without factory AC, sunroof and US emissions weighed about 2,790 LBS.

300 HP and 2,790 is still expressive even by today’s standards some 40 years on.

It’s was enough to make the 930 out accelerate all supercars of that era including the lamborghini countach and ferrari 512 bib.

The Euro engines pretty much stayed the same from 1978 to 1985, 300hp.
The ROW engines had a few variants such as the USA and Japan version, and those changed over the years. The USA had 2 versions, one specifically for California. (I had one of those, the engine weighed an unbelievable 510 pounds in full smog gear).
In 1986 all of the 930 engines received the "Euro" exhaust system, but again the other differences between Euro and US/ROW depended on the type number of the engine. By 1989 the USA engines were up to 282hp, they never did match the 300hp output of the Euro model.

Guys...Anything built for the European market will ALWAYS be considered rest of world, so from that perspective they are the same. ROW, or rest of world, is a term denoted to cars made by Porsche that were not intended (i.e. not legal) for the US market, meaning they are for everywhere else, hence rest-of-world. There is no such thing as a rest of world engine for the US, any engine for the US would not be called ROW, it would simply be a US spec’d motor. That’s not to say that you can’t have a ROW engine or Porsche in the US, as they came in through the grey market prior to turning 25 years of age, and then exempted out after 25 years.

As we all know, the US imposed strict EPA and DOT guidelines for all vehicles imported, which created these slightly different models, so any US spec motor will always be somewhat neutered in comparison to it’s ROW sibling. We may have gotten better protection against an accident thanks to the DOT, but the EPA somewhat castrated the engines at the same time.

Amg_only, my recommendation is to always go with the ROW engine anytime you’ve got the option to, it’ll always be as Porsche intended it to be. The US version is just the muted sibling of it, it’ll always have a slightly harder time breathing and produce a bit less horsepower. Hope that helps.
