964 Turbo - Boost Gauge Question...

Chaps,

Not sure if anyone knows this, being a 964 gen question in a 930 forum....but I'll give it a go (the 964/993 forum is complete tumbleweed)

Now my engine's back up and running, dyno'd and feeling sweet (and f-fast), I was wondering whether the integrated digital boost readout on the OBC can be made to read higher than the stock 0.7bar?

Is it a function of the sender that means it only reads to 0.7bar, or the way the OBC is programmed? If I were to source a sender that reads to 2 bar, am I likely to get a readout that displays my max of 1.4 bar? The digital display is in the format of "0.0" with a whole unit readout as well as the tenths.

(As an aside, a few years ago I did have a sub project to integrate a Stack stepper drive intelligent boost gauge into a stock 964 clock gauge...removing the clock internals and replace with Stack, made it look stock with custom needle and newly printed face, and crucially it retained the warning lights around the perimeter.....the trouble is, I actually prefer to have a good old analogue clock. Oh my God, I AM slowly becoming my Father, lol!)

Before someone suggests it, I can't swap the clock for a 934 style boost gauge, as there are a dozen warning lights in that unit, one inbetween each clock numeral.

Thanks in advance
S

Hi Spencer,
From a friend who has a 964turbo he confirmed that the original turbo pressure was stuck at 0.7bar, we can’t unlock it. At PLX he may have had a counter that fit under the counter but apparently it doesn’t work anymore.

Hi Pat, thanks for this - I did actually stumble upon on this tacho on Rennlist ("Cobalt"s car, if i remember correctly)...looks very functional, but I think he stopped making them many years ago unfortunately.

for a reason no one understands this ends at .7. and does not count higher if modified.

i stumbled over a conversion for vw cars years ago. they drill any dials and put coloured leds in. in combination with a print you have a led gauge (as the old one but with smaler leds) in your clock. starts green, then yellow and finally red. smal lights - only about 1.2 mm in diameter.
looks very nice. and you can keep your warning lights as there are lots.

have a spare 964 clock and this set somewhere. then i found an andial preasure guge for the left air outlet a wile ago so i never did that job with the leds. this andial item is easy to copy and looks great in any 964 turbo. will post a pic later.

Yes it was my car and AFAIK he no longer makes them. The system had its quirks and you couldn't data-log. So once you turned off the ignition all data was lost and no way to download it. He was working on something but it never came to be.

Unfortunately the factory left the gage at 0.7 bar there is a TSB addressing it although the 993TT's they made some adjustment so it reads to 0.8. No help there. I had the Andial gauge years ago that replaced the side vent but was impossible to look at while driving. Many install a gauge in the center console tray area.

AEM makes a nice range of gauges including a dual function boost controller and boost gauge and some nice AFR gauges I have installed in my track car. The issue is where to mont it.

Do a search on rennlist 964 turbo forum. A while back there was someone converting the clocks to boost gauges so it reads the boost and kept the warning lights.

GL let us know what you do.
