911SC transmission seals
Iv'e dropped the engine/trans in my 79 SC. The car has 188k miles and runs great. I'm only trying to replace leaky seals/hoses. I'll probably do a complete rebuild down the road. On the trans, my thought is to replace front and back shaft seals, the axle seals as well as the boot the seals shaft into the cockpit. The CV joints sound and feel fine so I plan on just replacing the cracked boots along with packing new grease. Any thoughts or opinions? I know this can be a slippery slope of costs/improvements so I'm trying to stick with my initial intention to stop the leaks. I've had the car over 20years and it's driven probably 3k miles a year.
Thanks, Shawn |

Just another opinion and you know what they say about those, but if you've had the car for 20 years and it continues to run great why dig deep? Remedy the leaks, check and replace old vacuum and fuel hoses, and put 'er back in. Have you checked the head studs?
I had one torn boot and over the winter installed 4 new CV joints and boots using new bolts; they are super cheap so I saved myself the mess of a thorough disassembly, clean, and reassembly of 40 year old parts. Some folks think the new stuff is inferior to the original P joints, but at 3K miles per year you'll be good for another 20 years at least. Big leak for me was the engine thermostat housing and I managed to change the O ring with the motor in the car. The old O ring was brittle and came off in pieces. Enjoy! |
