930 400HP Factory cars
Hi,
Is there any info out there on these cars. I have seen 2 at my mechanic, both have the fibreglass front spoiler and rear fender vents. Seems to be early to mid 80's cars. |

Porsche had a 330HP option on the 930, I've never heard of a 400HP option. RarlyL8 Motorsports has a 400HP option.

Below is another local 400HP car in this video here in South Africa.

330hp feels like 400hp in 930s

Knowing what Porsche typically did in that era, no way that car left the factory with 400 hp.
Also, no way that it will outrun a large displacement sport bike from that era, as the owner claims. He’s living his teenage fantasy, leave it at that. |

That appears to be a S/SE version, rated at 330hp. Upgraded intercooler and exhaust visible. No way it made 400hp from the factory.

Perhaps it was a ROW option only. Given that Porsche sold it to him as a 400hp car might have a been a special wishes option as he indicated.

Special wishes cars were usually (not always) ROW cars. In those early days, you pretty much had to know someone. Porsche was pretty conservative then and didn’t offer much in the way of tuning. Even the later RUF cars (BTR) weren’t 400 HP.
The guy is dreaming. |

I should also point out that Porsche A.G. did not sell him this car. At the time of the video production, he had only owned it for 16 years, which means that somebody else owned it for the first 20 years of its life.

See post of the red flatnose on page 60.

I don’t think Porsche put out anything in 1981 that made 400 hp. The most highly modified 930 they ever turned out (supposedly in excess of 500 modifications on it spec list) was built for Mansour Ojjeh in 1983 and it was rated at 375 hp. Nobody, and I mean nobody, had the factory clout and bankroll that he did.
The 1994 3.6L turbo S was rated at 380 hp. The special wishes program cars generally had only bolt-on engine modifications. Cams, intercoolers, mufflers, stiffer wastegate springs…. that was about it. Different turbos came later, I think the Mahle 98 mm pistons and cylinders came later (1983?) I think you’ll find out anything over 350 hp has had some aftermarket work. |

The most powerful 3.3 Turbo I ever heard about, was a 1992 Turbo S at 381hp. It used 964 cams (same as 3.6 Turbo S) and coincidentally used the same looking exhaust tips as the earlier 330 hp version.
As far as the red Turbo with 389hp dyno sheet, I would surely love to see it. What dyno and what correction factor? Too many stories without factual data. |

I have often wondered if the reason Porsche didn't offer a higher HP option was liability. Bumping the stock 300HP Euro engine to 330HP is nothing, a good set of headers gets you that. It would have been easily get to 400BHP with bolt-on parts that were available in the 80's.

^Yep, which is why I always find it humorous when the "original is best!" people clutch their pearls when they see a 930 with aftermarket parts on it. It's so easy to make more power, it's criminal to keep these cars hamstrung with crappy parts.
