Wanting back in the 930 game!

The only car I ever regret selling is my 930. I have had all different sports cars since then and wanted to get back into a 930 but couldn't afford the prices! I had finally found a great one in my lower end price range, send it in to get a PPI, and then the owner called me and said it sold while I was having the PPI done. So I am back in the hunt. I am trying to find one to drive, collector grades aren't in the budget. I would really like one with some mods and it seems like the modded ones are actually a little less expensive. What do you guys think a realistic price to find something is going to be nowadays for a 80-87? How much more for a 91? The selection looks pretty slim these days.

that booost bug!!! I pulled up the values of recent sales on bring a trailer.. there's a good amount going in the 70s-80s. Not many get listed on pelican these days (always looking) The 91s are def going over 100k.

Good luck on the search.. hope you find one! Would be sweet having another aircooled turbo buddy here in Denver!

Awesome thanks! I am trying to not buy off BAT because I have had a bad experience with it, so hopefully some private party ones will pop up. You have a green one eh? I bet that looks great, post up a pic!

Yeah hope you find one. Have you tried calling Storz or Eisenbuds or other air cooled related shops ans seeing if they happen to know any owners who don’t use their cars anymore?

I too exited 930 ownership only it was back in 2011. 930 prices seem like a hurdle now but investments have done well so it's probably a wash to buy back in.

Perhaps you can talk to some of the local independent wrenches and keep in touch with them. They certainly see lots of inventory which otherwise lives behind garage doors.

This may sound a little goofy, but pay for a craiglist ad in your local area under the cars and truck section, (not in the wanted section) and put Porsche 930 wanted, cash paid. If you're in a more populated area the better, or pay for one in a more populated area, say Denver, or even the highend ski areas like Aspen or Telluride, I ve seen several 930s kicking around there over the years, if that's any where near where you are. Spell out your phone number, will make it easier for people to get in touch. You'd be surprised who trolls craigslist when they are thinking of selling their stuff, especially older people who arn't say about posting online ads, or just don't make the effort. I had a long running ad, for some vintage Chevy truck rims and got some really amazing deals and people to get a hold of me that way.. just a thought.

The price for a 930 seems to be all over the place. I agree that the modded ones go for less than a clean low mileage garage queens. Expect to pay $60k to $80k. You might find one cheaper but it may need work...talk about $$$.

Seems like the really original low mile 930s on BAT easily topping $150K the last few offered. Not long ago that would be a big deal. One with 10K miles now on BAT should do even better. Seem like the buyers are back for 930s. After they get one like that then drive a nice upgraded one they might start to realize that 930s, as stock ones are, was that lower performance of the time was the only way to get to the price point they needed. After all they increased the performance in later years, not to mention towards 700+ HP at the same time from the same liters available with Porsche Motorsports upgrades. May be a good time to get one of either type before the next booooom, but to me the nice upgraded ones are more like they were designed to be, or could be.
If you like to drive instead of keeping it low miles, get ahead of the curve with a upgraded one before more figure it out.

I know of one being refreshed. It is a 79 930 that was upgraded maybe 15 years ago for father / son Porsche club DE racing. The shop that just finished a motor for my Norwood car bought it from them ( he worked on it over the years but it was, as mine was, getting ready for a refresh ) and is redoing the car and and mentioned he might sell it.

His shop does serious rebuilds / upgrades for some of the best Porsche restoration shops that specialize exclusively in these type of air cooled Porsches. I have seen it before he bought it and it still looked nice. It was a race on Sunday and to work on Monday looking, but will now have more HP probably around 500+ with current motec mngt and other upgrades but still be streetable. Could be in upper part of your price range.

OK I will give him a call to see where he is at. He was getting details done like some powder coating on some suspension & motor stuff. Looked like it has large single ball bearing turbo and Carrera intake with large port heads from what I remember when I saw it about two weeks ago. Should be easily 500HP for many hours of use..
