Shift linkage setup

I got the engine and transmission back in my 78 930, the clutch pedal cable connected and need setup the shift linkage. The manual states “turn the selector rod left in idle to stop”. Does that mean turn the shaft left until it stops? Is that neutral?

There's an article on adjusting and improving the shifter linkage for the 915 transaxle. If they share similarities it might be of some help to this situation

Shifting Improvements

Best of luck!

No, neutral will be found between the 1-2 and 3-4 planes. If you push the transmission shaft all the way back to the rear of the car, you’ll feel it thunk into a gear (that’s either 1 or 3), and if you pull it forward all the way that’ll be 2 or 4. Halfway between rearmost and frontmost positions, you’ll clearly feel it disengage… and that’s neutral. That’s the starting point for the twisting procedure in the manual.

Thank you. This is what I was looking for.

Is the shift coupler set screw something I can pickup at the parts/hardware store ?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1647060323.jpg

Not so much afaik. You could however buy the appropriate size grub screw and grind it to shape on a bench grinder.

It is a tapered screw. Ideally you would get the proper screw. At a pinch, for temporary fix - as pkabush says. But it is a precision fit and important to hold its place for linkages to work. So, long term, proper screw will be needed. Even that one comes loose from time to time. (Loctite when you have proper screw and alignment right).
