Gearbox leak

Hi all,

Dropped the engine today to replace the clutch and I'm trying to locate where the gearbox might be weeping oil from around the selector shaft cover. Seems its up higher the selector seal. Any ideas?

Cheers Greg

That is an easy fix /seal now you have it out. Replace the selector seal - because you are in there. And replace the cover gasket. Because it is the only other option. And you are in there. Easy jobs.
While you are in there. I would put some sealant on the gasket.
Alan
PS stand the g/box on the end when you do these.

Yes, and I'll add the obvious - great time to replace that ground strap.

I did the seal several years ago with engine in the car. A bit of a pain in the ass with little room to maneuver and pull out the seal. Lots of swearing helped to ease it out.
And yeah, put some sealant around the outside of the seal just to make sure it doesn't ooz past the mating surface.

Thanks Alan,
Are you saying to apply sealant on the selector shaft seal like Mark mentioned or the paper gasket for the gearbox cover?

Thanks for your input guys.

I was really talking about the cover gasket - but what Mark says would also be useful. I don't normally put sealant there - but prob good insurance.

I was thinking of trying this in the car and was pretty sure it would be a PIA. Maybe better now that I can get the car up in the air on the scissor lift.
Would you do it again if needed?

Don’t even use the paper seal. It doesn’t impact pinion depth like it does on a 911 gearbox. Go straight to rtv sealant exclusively.

What Matt said. Omit the gasket and use rtv. Carefully clean up both surfaces with brake cleaner or alcohol and use the gray 3 bond 1184 (hondabond, fujibond, suzukibond, yamabond etc.). It'll be bone dry 3 decades later.

If you hunt around, I do recall some postings on people having done this.
It is tight in there, but possible to do. I think getting the old seal out is a bit tricky too - not much room to work in. Normally you can tap a screw in the outer bit of the old seal and yank it out. But I don't think you have the room to do that.
Have a hunt for the old threads.
Alan

Thanks to Pelican Projects I found a write up of how to replace the seal without pulling the motor:

Thanks!
