New 88 RoW Turbo - tuning advice
Bought a 930 yesteday.
88 model, 115.000 Miles. Delivered new in Germany, then England - then Norway last 20 years. New exhaust complete in 2018 and a new turbo too. Plans for it: Well, send the turbo to TTE for an internal upgrade. Do some wastegate mods, stiffer spring, get an adjustable WUR to lean out the midrange? Fuchs wheels and toss the old ones. KW suspension eventually. Looking for around 400 bhp while keeping the CIS. Since its got a new exhaust and turbo, Im looking to modify the turbo ( TTE germany probably), and keep the original system. Modifying the Original turbo and keeping the stock exhaust system, what are the low hanging fruits here? Base mods. Delivered new with the following options: 197 F STAERKERE BATTERIE 220 F SPERRDIFFERENTIAL 383 F SPORTSITZ LI.ELEKTR.HOEHENVERSTELL. 387 F SPORTSITZ RE.ELEKTR.HOEHENVERSTELL. 533 F ALARM-ANLAGE INTERVALL 650 F DACH ELEKTR.VERSTELLBAR 00011 PERU-ROT H 1 (MOD. 77) LESONAL 042 BEST. 30.3.88 FARBE NACH WAHL: 00311 CHAMPAGNER SITZE UND INNENAUSSTATTUNG LEDER NACH WAHL: 00321 CHAMPAGNER TEPPICH: *VF* #NUR IN VERBINDUNG MIT CODE 98 / 99#AUS ANGEBOT 02091 (LENKRAD SCHWARZ) GANZLEDERAUSSTATTUNG AUS ANGEBOT, JEDOCH ABWEICHENDE FARBKOMBINATION - SIEHE BEIL. Beautiful car, love the color and interior!
Since your car is Euro, you should have enough fueling in the stock fuel head and lines to make 400bhp. An adjustable WUR and RPM CSV switch would definitely help optimize the tune so you’re not running pig rich at boost onset then leaning out on the top end. I recommend installing an aftermarket boost gauge (the unit built into the tach is junk) and a wideband AFR gauge so that you can accurately monitor boost level and engine fuel trims. Beyond that, you’re looking at a K27 7200 turbo or similar, good free flowing aftermarket headers and exhaust, a good efficient aftermarket intercooler and around 1 bar of boost. |

Beautiful 930!
If your goal is 400bhp on CIS you will not be able to retain the Euro exhaust system. The standard formula for 400bhp is headers, bigger turbo and bigger IC. Boost level may need to be increased depending on the specific items chosen. Our system hits 400bhp easy using a K27-7200 and stock boost. Yes the 7200 is OE for the 964T. The '88 Euro does not have the same CIS as the earlier '78-'85 Euro engines. You will likely need more fuel at this level. An AFR meter is highly recommended when any significant modification is made so you can dial in proper fueling.

Interesting brian! Ok so keeping the euro exhaust , What would you recommend? To be honest 350-360 bhp is fine too…7200 turbo and 0.9-1 bar wg spring? What about a brian leask wur? What does it mean that the 88 CIS is not the same? Been meaning to call you…

Our headers are good for 50HP at the wheels alone. It's all about breathing so the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. Yes to hit 350bhp using a 7200 without headers would require increasing the boost level.
Age and multiple owners tends to add mystery to replaced parts and repairs. Best to verify what you have now. Check the fuel distributor and see if it is black (iron, -037) or silver (aluminum, -145). Check the last 3 numbers on the WUR and see if they are -112 or -153. Install an AFR meter, that's the only way to know definitively if you'll need fuel mods.

When my wrench came back after doing a drive for the PPI on my car ("mostly stock" RoW 930/60 motor), he was grinning broadly. Quite unlike him..
All he'd say was "SC cams really wake a 930 up". That (stock RoW headers/muffler, open dump, 3DLZ, intercooler) dyno'd 330 crank, plenty of mid-range response (but atrocious turbo lag). Kokelyn intercooler, GHLs, & K27/HF made 370 wheel HP with good mid-range/faster & linear boost. More ignition timing made it happier still mid-range (34 degrees off-boost worked pretty well IIRC). Both with stock wastegate/spring.

I have two new rebuild K27 7200 turbos for sale here in Denmark, I can ship easily to Norway.
One of the K27 7200 has a very rare bigger compressor housing (larger volute volume) for an extra 50hp. It ran on Sebring and Daytona on a 1977 3.0 930 car/engine build by the legend Hans Mandt (former 934 chief mechanic for Bronus racing team etc.) with his special modified CIS system matched to a Carrera inlet manifold and ported heads and art work of ported crank case. It made reliable +550hp on the track with this turbo and setup. I have the 930 race car here. The turbo is freshly rebuild and like new. I also have plenty of brand new ball bearing turbos in 250-1500hp range in T3 and T4 single, or twin scroll turbine housings. Plenty of 400hp options and turbine variants. Also have some brand new journal racing turbos in 400-750hp range T3 and T4 twin scroll mode. Also have a couple of upgrade 930 headers as well. And some intercoolers.... |
