Fuel Relay keeps going bad

I tried to start my car today and did not hear the fuel pumps come on. I went to pull the relay and the cover came off I pushed the tab together and the pumps came on and the car fired up let go of the plate on the relay and it stalled. I borrowed a relay from a friend and the car started for a second and then that relay went bad. What would cause a fuel pump relay to instantly go bad when power is put to it any ideas?
Thanks

One other thing how do I test the relay to make sure it is bad or not?

Sounds like the socket, not the relay.

Thanks for the reply. The relays were fine I checked them by jumping pin 86-87 and they were making contact. I checked the yellow relay and it was working. Took out the intercooler and airbox and checked all connections everything seemed fine. When I put it all back together it fired right up and ran great. I am guessing/hoping it was a bad connection somewhere that I accidently fixed when checking.

Could also be a ground, the fuse panel, a fuse, fuel pump(S), or….. You may be lucky enough to have fixed it. If not one easy item to consider is by passing the fuse in the panel with two fused links from the battery to the relays. The thread will pop up with a search and it’s nicely presented with good photos. It fixed my unexplained sudden fuel failures.

Thank you for the reply Hopefully it is fixed if it happens again I will try your suggestion. Luckily I did not burn out the relay I borrowed from a friends 911.

It could well be the contact on, or the o/boost switch itself. This will lead to intermittent pump shut downs.
If the problem persists - check that part closely . Wiggle the terminal and the contact connector etc with car running (if possible).

There was a time where fuel pump relays were dying quickly in my car, lasting a month or less. They tested for continuity but still dint actually work. They were the uros. Luckily I had a spare so could validate that there was a functional difference. Problem at higher current?

I bought a bunch of old used red ones and keep a bag of them in my glovebox - I'm pretty sure that wards away evil spirits that want to live in the relay.

For about $20, you can replace the stock fuel pump circuit with two 4 pin Bosch relays drawing power directly off the battery via two fused lines. And you might as well do the headlight relay upgrade while you are in there.
