911sc clutch CLUNKS when engages
I've only owned one porsche...the 81 911sc i have had for over 20 years. Love the car but for 20 years i've been disastisfied with the clutch action. When the clutch engages for 1st or 2'nd gear, there is a noticeable CLUNK. Not a smooth clutch enage at all. I've had a lot of sports cars, ive never had one where the clutch to flywheel engagement was so harsh and unpleasant. It's possible to engage it smoothly, but needs to be done so gingerly and carefully that it takes for ever to blow through the gears. RPMS drop whil im trying to get it engaged. Only happens in 1'st and 2nd gear, no issues in 3, 4 or 5. ANy suggestions? or are they all like this. THANKS

Does it have the rubber center clutch?
I wonder if your rubber center is shot?

I don't think the SC has a rubber center clutch option. Mine certainly isn't. But my 930 had one that was destroyed and had exactly those symptoms.
At a guess the clutch is going to need to come out to find the issue. One other possibility - which I had recently was the trans mounting bolts loose. Either the two big ones, or the 4 small ones in the middle of the trans bracket. Nothing to do with the clutch, but a noticeable clunk when letting it out - most obvious in lower gears. Alan

Mine does something very similar. I can slowly let out the clutch and avoid it. I installed a new clutch and readjusted everything this year. I just assumed this was normal. I’ve ordered new mounts for the engine and transmission. Just because the current ones are 40 years old even tho the “look”good. I’ll let you know if that helped me. I was also thinking maybe the old clutch cable might be dry… not sure I want to battle that. Please let me know if you find a solution.

What headers are you running?
I have seen cars with the EBAY headers which actually contact the Omega spring when the clutch is disengaged... If you let out the pedal sorta slowly you can avoid the 'clunk' but let it out at the normal speed, and as the pedal gets right out..'clunk'..... Just a thought....
