Broken locking wheel nut.
I was taking my lhs front wheel off to access my windscreen washer reservoir which has sprung a leak. Last wheel nut to remove was the locking lug nut but using a bit of misplaced force i.e my foot on the wrench, it slipped and snapped off the head of the bolt. These bolts I believe are aluminium.
Now I have nothing to guide the locking nut socket onto the coded nut and it keeps slipping off when I try to turn it. I have to push very hard on the socket and at the same time turn it which I can’t do. I have been quoted £165 here in the UK for someone to remove it. What’s the best way? I thought about whacking a socket over the locking nut with a lump hammer and trying that way, any ideas. I am afraid an impact driver on the nut will probably ruin the coded socket, I have removed the other 3 lock nuts in case that happens. The wheels on my 930 are the factory standard Fuchs. Thanks. |

David, Here is what I would do…(although a professional shop may have a better idea) put all the lug nuts back on and tighten to 90ft-lbs, then use your lug it key and an impact wrench to remove stuck nut. Also soak the stuck lug nut with penetrating oil for a day or so first.

Get an extractor tool that will fit over the broken nut, and remove. These tools are very common and should be easy to find. We use a different brand, but there are many to choose from....

![]() Never been let down by this style of remover. Cheers Thanks for advice. Have seen these nut removers, I assume that they have a reverse thread which cuts itself onto the damaged nut. Didn’t really want to buy a whole set which, hopefully, I will use only once. Having said that, they are a lot cheaper to buy than the quote I got from a mobile wheel nut removal expert. As the wheel nuts are aluminium I am still tempted to try hammering on a normal socket and trying that way. I don’t think the lug nut is exceptionally tight, I think it is more corroded on. |

How long is the lever you are using? A 24"-36" breaker bar and a long extension to help guide keeping things square that should loosen up. Looks like you were just applying downward force vs torque. Something like a Tekton 2905 manual hand impact could work.

I would try hammering a socket over it as you said I have done this a few times and it always worked. It is aluminum so the socket should go on. but as said above first put all of the other lugs on and tighten to take some of the load off the lock.

Have ordered some nut removers like Jeff suggested , arriving next week and have borrowed son’s impact wrench for major attempt next week, fingers crossed.
Will keep you posted also as to how I get on repairing the windscreen washer set up. This was the reason I had to remove the front wheel. |

David, the piece that broke off does not look important. if the part of the lug not that is still on the wheel and not deformed too much (you didn't show a picture of that) I would just use your original lug nut key with the impact wrench. I do not think you will have a problem. You can always use the not removers as Jeff suggested if the first attempt does not work.

Hammering a socket on is a tried and true method as well. Give that a go too.

I use cheap 12 point sockets for hammering on the wheel locks.

Success with the locking lug nut. Used the nut remover on it with the impact wrench. Didn’t want to risk damaging the lug nut key because I still have 3 good locking nuts. There was very little of the broken lug nut left on the wheel so didn’t want to risk just hammering on a socket.in case that rounded it off so much that the remover wouldn’t have anything to grip on.
Will send a picture of the culprit nut. |
