Shift knob issue

Hi folks, I have the Weltmeister short shift kit in my 930 (4 speed) and it had a bad leather shift knob on. I purchased an original from Porsche, and it cracked when I tried to install it with a sleeve... I got a second one (I am almost ashamed to write this) and it cracked as well as it went on.

So I'm wondering a few things:
-Did Porsche change the supplier of the knob and they are more fragile now than before?
-Did I do something wrong?
-Is the shifter shaft thinker than it should? That would be odd because Weltmeister says it uses the original shift knob.

So is anyone else using the Weltmeister short shift kit? What knob are you using? I have read lots of bad reviews of that short shift kit, mostly from folks with the 915 gearbox but in the 930 I find it works quite well and I have no complaints.

What shift knob are you all using? I saw the american 8-ball knobs, they actually are kind of nice but they don't fit stock, and I wonder if they would be too heavy.

Thanks

David

I use the Wevo short shifter but have also used (and been quite happy with the Weltmeister). Probably not much help but I make my own sift knobs on my lathe. They are secured to the shifter shaft with two stainless steel recessed set screws (see below):

I have had good luck with some of the Momo knobs that have an aluminum base and they secure to the shifter with three steel set screws. Never had one of those break but I just like mine better.

I have used this specific knob w/o any problems:

Thanks! I’m starting to think aftermarket too so I don’t waste another $150 and crack the shift knob. I saw the American shifter pool ball ones but I think they may be too big for a 911. Perhaps if they made one with the British pool ball size
Or maybe the balsa 917 style ones would look good, or get somebody who can turn one made of ebony like Singer makes!!
