fan housing 930 106 006 06 NLA from Porsche

the turbo fan housing shows as NLA from Porsche yet the 3.2L fan housing 930 106 006 07 is available.
Whats the difference between the 2? I suspect its the mounting location for the coil on the turbo fan housing, is the boss there on the 3.2 ? has anyone modified the 3.2 housing to be a 3.3 housing?
my fan housing has a crack and some corrosion.
its possible I am reading PET wrong and the 3.2 part works on the 3.3 without issue....
aftermarket fan housings for sale seem to indicate that it will fit either, prices for this part in the aftermarket seem all over the map, with most US vendors applying a HEAVY porsche tax aka markup.

Per the master sheet any SC 78-83 fan housing will work

Rennline makes a really nice one out of aluminum anodized, will not crack like magnesium

I would prefer a magnesium housing and it sure seems strange that Porsche has stopped selling them.
Ok, well the 77-83 fan housing is listed in PET as 930-106-005-00 or 930-106-006-00 and both are discontinued.

If you Google" 93010600606 magnesium fan housing " you will come up with many more options than rennline. Shipping from Europe is not that bad, anyone explore these options?

after replacing two cracked ones over the years i made the decision to get the rennline one. one of them was the old sc type i had to get it machined to fit the alternator.

We have had to replace so many of the cast mag ones lately, as they're simply too cracked and corroded to save. Between supporting the weight of the alternator, and people over-tightening the belt, they lead a hard life.

There are reproduction ones from Europe. We have not used them yet.

The fan ring was cast aluminum on the 1991-98 Turbos, not cast magnesium.

We have recently used several of the Vertex reproduction fan rings, also made of cast aluminum.
Years ago these were awful; we usually had to re-machine the alternator mount so it would fit properly and on-center, plus give it a few hours of cosmetic fine-tuning so it looked as good as original.
The last few were quite good, with only mild cosmetic attention needed (ex: get rid of name cast on top).

The Rennline 2-piece one: won't use them.

Looks like I need to do a better job searching the forum.
Fan Shroud
Magnesium doesn't just have a corrosion problem, it gets brittle with age and cracks are the result. I will be ordering a new part, will report back on how well it fits, or doesn't fit.

I wound up buying one from Carpoint - good quality and great price if you buy from them directly. These are aluminum which makes them stronger -[edit I was wrong, it is magnesium]. I had it coated with Cerekote and it looked great.

Interesting the Carpoint listing says in the details that it's magnesium and weight of 1200 grams matches my original one. Will weigh it when it arrives. Ordered a few other small items from them. Their prices are attractive. I am probably going to buy a new fan as well, mine is so corroded I am sure it's out of balance, new from Porsche seems right about $400 depending which dealer you shop at.

I stand corrected - it is magnesium. I’m sorry for the confusion.

Well I got to say I am impressed with Carpoint.de. I ordered parts Friday night, selected their most economical shipping option. The parts were on my doorstep Wednesday. This is better service than I get from Rock-Auto....

The part fits on the engine with no adjustment or flashing removal. Surface finish isn't as smooth as the old part, it feels like a rough sand blasted finish.
I feel like this is a good quality part for a fair price.

Had bad luck with the rennline ones? Yes, they are two pieces but have dowel pins to keep everything stiff and aligned.

The visible edge misalignment of the 2x pieces when assembled and off-axis seam was already enough of a turn-off aesthetically, but there were other issues as well. And it wasn't just the one part, we had saw and felt the same misalignment on another, too.

I went with the vertex about 15 years ago. I must have spent 20 hours cleaning it up!

It's adding a pound or two at the back of the car but at least it won't fail.

Good to hear they've gotten better.

I went out and took a pic the alignment is very close and checks around the fan tips and the clearance in between that and the housing is more uniform than the stock one. mine is a flat black because i ordered grey instead of black and had it stripped and re anodized black.
