Sourcing Stock Exhaust System for 1979 930

Hi everyone.

Last week I was fortunate to acquire a 1979 930 from out of state. It has a nice upgraded race exhaust system, intercoolers, K27-7006, etc from RarelyL8 Motorsports. The car is currently still in Miami and will be shipped to me in Orange County, California soon.

The car comes with some spare parts including the stock intercooler and intake, and aftermarket cats and muffler. However from pics of the spare parts and looking at the underside pictures of the car, there is no sign of any remaining stock exhaust components.

When the car arrives, I will begin the process to register in CA which requires all cars 1975 model year and newer to go to an approved station and obtain a smog. The car will not pass the visual part of the smog inspection without having the stock components.

Does anyone have a source for a used stock exhaust system? I do see stock parts for sale on ebay but if someone knows of a full stock system someone's garage or shop, then I would appreciate a heads up. I'm also going to reach out to a couple of local shops in the area.

Cheers.

I have some parts from an '86 cali car. I'm unsure what parts were shared between the years. I have (all very good condition)

2 heat exchangers
J pipe
crossover
wastegate
the full air injection setup including pump, spider, all the pierburg switches and the rest of the nonsense

some other odds and ends

I'm transiting the ICW right now, floating somewhere between St. Auggies and Jacksonville, but s/b home in a week and can get pics if interested. pm me.

Look into a Montana LLC, will be cheaper and easier in the long run!

I appreciate the heads up.

*EDIT *

I hear that South Dakota is doing something similar and it makes us a less likely target for Police than Montana.

By the way, I want to thank Brian from RarelyL8 Motorsports for providing me with some great information about the 1979 OE exhaust system. It is a completely different system than the US 1986-1989 models.

Mostly notably, the 1979 did not come with a catalytic converter. I understand this is why it wasn't imported to the US for the 1980-1985 years.

I found some old diagrams of the 1970's 930 exhausts and they only seem to include headers/heat exchanger, waste gate, misc piping and the muffler.

Glad to help however I can.
Here is a picture of (part of) the "78/9 USA exhaust system. If at all possible you do not want to put this stuff back on the engine. There are a thousand little parts including brackets, bolts, diverter valves, tubes, sensors and a myriad of other crap.

Hey Longboarder. I also have a '79 in Orange County. I have removed my thermal reactors/ exhaust in favor of a 86-89 exhaust system. I've only had to smog it twice but both times I used creativity to get around the visual. Honestly it's a major pain in the arse. My mechanic can get it to pass the actual test but the visual is a crap shoot. The biggest issue is the spider looking air injectors being disconnected. Visible in the first photo Brian posted. Second issue is the missing EGR valve which I actually don't see in Brian's photos above.

I think I see the air injection pump in the first photo and that is still on my car. Brian's second photo shows the stock exhaust with the thermal reactor 'delete' pipes. The candleabra looking things. Those used to be available aftermarket. As an aside , Brian has come to my rescue a few times as well with valuable information as have many others.

I have all my original parts but not for sale for obvious reasons. I'm more than happy to show you all the parts so you would know exactly what you need. Reach out and we can chat or get together.

There should be a sticker in your door jamb that says 'non catalyst'. I'm right now trying to get my car back together so I can enjoy the next year before I have to smog it again and who knows what will happen.

The '78/9 smog system on the 930/60 CA engines has a few different switches and valves than the later '86-9 systems, likely due to the lack of a catalytic converter.

This is what the Red Rocket engine looked like when first obtained. 1979 CA smog engine weighing in at a svelte 520 pounds! Went on a serious diet loosing all of that smog crap and adding light weight exhaust components.

Here is what we offer for those wanting/needing a catalytic converter that looks the part without losing too much power (sport cats look like mufflers). The cat plugs in place of the Street or Hooligan muffler body on our system.

Thanks so much for the offer! I would be thrilled to come by and snap some photos of your full 1979 system just so I know what I would need.

In the mean time, Brian is sending me the modular OEM-looking catalytic converter in his photo above so that I can have it put on the Hooligan muffler. I will try to pass smog with the cat and a nice lean tune up. And will hope the smog tech doesn't know what the stock system should look like, or is content that a 44 year old car that didn't have an OEM cat, now has one fitted. And yes, my car does have the "Non Catalyst" sticker on on the driver side door jam.

My 930 was leaking a lot of oil when I got it and was also running rough in the upper RPMs...so right now the engine is out waiting for all new gaskets. Hope to get it back together and then on the dyno to tune it to run right and to pass smog. But that will take some time. I signed up for the Porsche Owners Club White Glove Concourse June 22 at Sea Terrace Park in Dana Point since it's about a 30 second drive from my house lol. Hope to have it all done by then. Would love to have another 930 parked beside it! I signed up on Motorsport Reg.
