I'm partial to Brad Penn 20W-50 for my 930 (Mobil 1 on all the modern cars)

I use the 5-quart jugs of Mobil 1 15w-50. Easy and cheap to buy from Walmart online. My mechanic (indy shop) uses Brad Penn. Mobil 1 V-twin is also good, as well as Driven, Royal Purple, VR-1, and a couple others.

I love it.......someone that will admit not changing their oil at least yearly regardless of mileage. I'm a believer that with the current quality of oil, as few miles I may log over a period of time and with a clean (indoor) storage environment, an engine that is clean enough inside that the oil can look new when you drain it, an oil change every 2 or 3 years is not out of the question.
I keep these on hand for when I feel a change is necessary:
Mobil 1- 15w50 10 qts bought at Walmart in 5 qt jugs
Mahle 0C54 oil filter purchased online.

I am the same with my SC - I don't go draining 'fresh' oil that has a few kms on it and been sitting for a year. But I think the key is to get the engine to working temp for at least a modest duration (not just warming it in the shed). Blow the condensation out. I suspect the condensation is as big an issue as anything.

I change annually, as I put on at least a 2-4 thousand miles per year. I don't know if the detergents and such in the oil "wear out" with time, but there are acids that build up as a by product of combustion, so I'd rather not have that etching away at metal stuff. Gives me an excuse to feel manly and use some tools for an hour, at the very least.

I used to think that the Mobil1 V-twin oil with its higher ZDDP content would be superior to the others, but I am starting to wonder if that is necessarily true. Two potential problems, 1) there is an additive package designed for wet clutch pack and 2) the higher the ZDDP content, the lower the detergent content. Potentially the 15W-50 should prove adequate, but if you want to add a higher ZDDP content, you could always add a quart or two of 0W-50 racing oil. But then again I am purely guessing here with what little tribology knowledge I possess. And just to confuse things a bit, I added the description for the more interesting Mobil1 oils.

Doing well indeed.
I have moved home and business. The car took a backseat.
However 500 miles would still be pretty light. Let me explain,
I was still in the tuning process. One day I swapped my rear stickies for some more mellow 225section tires because of the leak I had in the rear tire. Well I found those pretty entertaining and one night on my way home from work I thought maybe I’d try a 2nd gear drift which I’d never done. Well it was a spin and stuff into a curb that took the car off the road. It was an easy fix but I decided I wanted to do a backdate which I didn’t expect to take too long but it’s been 7 years. I’m nearly ready to drive again.

I have been using Brad Penn / Penn Grade in my air cooled Porsches since forever.

The turbo on my 86 930 was leaking oil and used 5 or 6 quarts on the way to Luft last year. I didn’t have enough Penn Grade with me so I switched to VR1 20:50 - it’s all I could get on the road. The turbo quit leaking and the car used less than a quart on the return trip.

I called my turbo builder and he said that he hates getting a turbo in for rebuild that has been running the Penn Grade oil - they are all coked up. He told me that 1 qt of consumption was totally normal in the 2100 km return trip. Yay! I didn’t need to rebuild my turbo…

So yah - VR1 all the way now.

I will say I agree with the Brad Penn comments Brad Penn is fine for NA air cooled Porsche's, but add in a turbo and the heat can break down any conventional dino oil and coke up the oil passages. That's why we should be using synthetic oil. Much higher resistance to breaking down due to heat and no coking at all.

I use 20/50 VR1 full synthetic or the mobil 1 V twin.
Be careful, because there is a VR1 conventional, that will have the same coking concerns. Worse, it says right on the bottle that it's not for prolonged use with catalytic converters (if anyone still has theirs on). It doesn't say that in the synthetic version.

Amsoil 20/50 every 5k for the last 125K (ish) miles. Usually Premium or Z-Rod, both with high Zinc. Just rolled over to 159,000 this week on a trip.

Wow. Very interesting. I have Brad Pitt in my garage. He was in the 930 and I had a bunch of leaks. Recently as many may know from my thread I had turbo seal issues and photos proved a super coked up turbo. Of course the car is old and not driven enough so can’t say Mr Pitt was an issue but interesting now that I hear others experiences and thoughts. My current mechanic said VR1 so that’s what I’m running. New turbo. Still a couple leaks but I’m hoping they are self healing as I put miles in her. Kraus, you’re a crack up.
