Oil cooler auxiliary fan replacement

Hi guys ,

I plan to replace my still original auxillary fan for the front oil cooler . I checked out the pelican catalog and the OEM Porsche part is expensive and I narrowed down my selection 2 types both of them the push type manufactured by Mocal . The diameter of one model is 5 inches ( total dimension 6 x 4 ) and the other one is 7.5 inches ( total dimension 8 x 2 inches . I would like to know w/c one would be easier to install w/o much modification . It would also be helpful to know if these are reliable / and durable .

Thanks in advance ,

tdh888

Thanks for the tip timc . I’m just making sure if it’s the OEM Auxiliary fan is on the way south or if it’s just the relay that needs to be replaced . Unfortunately if Pelican no longer have the German made red round relay , I will be force to buy the Chinese crap relay available.

SO there's an aftermarket fan that is mentioned in that thread, read thru it, I have it and it is far superior to the OEM and the ER fan....

91161510801 is the part no. of the oil cooler auxillary fan . It seems we’re having the same problem . I replaced the relay this afternoon and went for a drive for 45mins . It was hot & humid , got stuck in moderate traffic . Oil temperature never got beyond 9’ o’clock ( using a BMW oil cooler temp thermostat mine is set to turn on the fan at 99 degrees C ) .

Another option would be to bypass the relay and direct wire a toggle switch to the dash. This way you flip the switch when sitting in traffic or during extended idling.

Rather than start a new thread regarding oil coolers.
What I would like to know is what type of oil cooler should a 1978 930 have at the front.
I have seen the radiator type mounted in the front fender also the trombone type.
Currently I have the slant nose front cooler below the front bar. However I am considering replacing the front valance with the original style panel.
Steve.

I bought a fan from patrick motorsports and wired it up on my own temp controller, its very quiet and has little issue maintaining a safe temp.

Thankyou Greg.

I would not think the trombone would be very efficient, however if I am to restore back to factory then that’s what I will have to use.

Cheers

Steve.

Your right Steve, they are are not very efficient, although I haven't had any issue in my 79. Spent a bit of time cleaning to removing years of road grime so it dissipates the heat better.

The 7" Spal pusher fan we recommend. Made in Italy, excellent quality, higest CFM, lowest profile and super reliable. You want to mount the fan as high as possible with the horn set you have.

**Optional updated fan set with the correct 4mm pin harness connector end to match the original fan harness.

911 624 121 00 EPW | Engine Oil Cooler Blower Fan - High Power (437 CFM) 7" Dia Pusher - Includes Original PORSCHE Connector Housing Harness End - For replacement or update of Original 4 Blade Fan Set With Porsche Harness - SPAL / GENUINE PORSCHE / EP-WEST

930 606 118 01 EPW | Temp Switch Sender Kit for Oil Cooler Fan - 911 Carrera / 930 Front Right Oil Cooler | 99 Deg. C (210.2 F) - Includes sealing ring - Correct 4mm Pin For Factory Harness - Direct Replacement - EP-WEST USA
+ Replaces PN: 930 606 118 00 - Temp Switch On Oil Cooler Front Right - 911 / 930 = 118 Deg. C (244.4 F) & 900 123 009 30 - A14x18 mm Sealing Ring

*We also have another fan that is ~1\2 cost instead of the Spal $80 fan above but it doesn't rate as high as the Spal.

911 612 800 EPW | Engine Oil Cooler Blower Fan Harness Set (ORIGINAL STYLE) - GENUINE PORSCHE / EP-WEST
Includes:
(1) Electrical Harness Front Fan Blower Oil Cooler Temperature Switch
(1) Electrical Harness Front Fan Blower Oil Cooler
(1) Relay

Is that right ? I’m surprised Porsche used the trombone cooler on any 930.
My 81 has the 28 row brass cooler. I’ve always assumed all 930s did until 86 when they switched to the radiator style.

I must say I am surprised as well. I have seen early 911s with the trombone cooler and thought the early 930 would have had a superior oil cooler due to the performance and heat issues. This is probably why the later than 79 had the radiator style.
And what is the 28 row brass cooler ???

I am pretty sure it is. My cars built date is Feb 1979, all stock and it has the trombone oil cooler, Looking at the PET illustrations it also states pre 80 cars had the radiator coil. Happy for someone to state otherwise.

Hi gax,

Another quick question for you.

Does your 930 have electric door mirrors ?

And I have tracked down and purchased a trombone cooler.

Thanks Steve.

I know Euro Parts West makes some nice mounting brackets and I’ve seen a couple other approaches, but why not just use the common aftermarket fan mounting kits that hold larger heavier fans on just fine?
Not like we need or want a full shroud for airflow purposes.
I was going to fab up a metal bracket and a long time Porsche mechanic asked why not just use a universal mounting kit.
Edit: I stared at it for a few mins and decided to order a 12”x12”x1/8” sheet of aluminum on Amazon and I’ll make a shroud / mounting bracket .
Still, if anyone has any feedback, I’m all ears.
Yay or nay?

I put my own fan together from some parts from Summit. 7" fan and a thermostatic controller. I had a radiator style cooler not the trombone. The thermocouple just pokes between two fins on the cooler.

Works fantastic.

I did have to replace the horns with the little compact Hella ones, but no biggie the originals didn't work anyway.
