Driver/Survivor Black 1987 930 Build

I recently purchased a black 1987 930 that was parked in a barn (really) since 2004 when the owner became too old to drive it anymore. It was his pride and joy apparently while he was still active. This will be my fourth Porsche restoration.

A number of parts were removed from the car and disappeared over the years including the tea tray and engine deck lid (arg!) the front trunk lid and various other small parts. The wheels are corroded badly.

On the positive side, the engine turns over smoothly and the internals are in good shape. Did not try to start it.

There is little to no rust anywhere on the car, which is a relief, I still need to pull all the carpet and seats to be sure. I have checked underneath on a lift and cleaned all the sand and debris out of it (think 5 gallon buckets of acorns) without discovering any rust. The original cosmoline is still present on a lot of the lower parts of the car. The original paint is good enough that I think it can be saved with a few chips touched up.

My plan is to totally rebuild the engine with new Mahle pistons, cylinders, carrillo rods, clewett engineering electromotive EFI kit, some kind of faster spooling turbo, Tial wastegate, 964 cams, and if I can scrape up the denarius some Rarlyl8 headers. The fuel tank will get cleaned and all new fuel system built, probably using the black nylon AN lines and fittings. I have used the stainless AN line before and have all the tools to put it together.

I decided this is enough for a fun street car and I don't need 3.8 cylinders or giant turbo, etc. With no traction control or stability management I think this will be wild enough. I see this as never being a concours car but being a car for someone who wants to drive it and enjoy without worrying about every little ding. Here is the car when I picked it up (no in barn pics unfortunately though still trying to find some):

I am sure I will have lots of questions and will post progress pictures if you folks are interested in seeing them.

I have not posted much on Pelican but I am active on 914 World. I'd describe myself as an amateur car restorer who is not afraid to take on challenges.

Started locating the missing pieces, like these tail light buckets and lenses.

These are NOS and look like they should be in a museum.

Those are euro rear buckets, not sure it matters to you but they're missing the side marker bulb behind the reflector that a US car would normally have. And they're white inside while US tails are silver.

Sounds like you don't plan on keep it stock anyway, in which case just use the ones you prefer.

Sorry for the lack of posts, been making a lot of progress on the car. I am looking for two engine castings that are badly corroded on my car. Not had much luck searching the usual places (ebay, pelican, rennlist, dcautomotive, la dismantlers, etc.).

I guess these are casting numbers, which DC Automotive guys told me do not correspond exactly to part numbers? That was new information to me. Maybe there are other casting numbers or part numbers that can interchange with these?

930.105.111.2R

930.105.102.0R

I would appreciate any help or suggestions from people.

John

The car has cleaned up surprisingly nicely, other than the engine, which we have had to take all the way down to splitting the case.

I've taken apart the bumpers for cleaning and parts replacement as necessary.

There is a lot of the original cosmosline on the underside of the car, which I am leaving in place. That stuff resists cleaning with simple green and brushes so it is not hard to leave it.

welcome and congrats John - that's a heck of a barn find, certainly better than that patina'd blue Ruf rofl... crykie that one's rOUGH

yours looks to be off to a terrific start - agreed on the cosmoline, keep up the great work

unsure how technical you are - those bits are a cam / valve train carrier, and RH timing chain box... unsure of official nomenclature but that should get you pointed in right direction... forgive me if you know this

good luck w/ the resurrection - God's Werk

Will a 911 camshaft housing work on 930 engine?

Hey Paul, thanks for the reply and encouraging words!

I am new to 911s and turbos especially but I have restored several 914s. I always welcome any tips and hints, trying to learn more.

Today I spent a few hours looking at the 1986 911 PET (there does not seem to be a 1987 911 PET?). I think the PART number for the part I am looking for is:

Camshaft housing PET part #18 is 930.105.021.00 -> replaced by .07 or .09 (according to Pelican). This part is $2200 new from Porsche with various places offering it discounted for $1750. Ouch.

The CASTING number on my part is 930.105.111.2R.

I read on Rennlist that there are 911 parts with casting numbers starting with 901 that are the "same" as the 930 ones and that once the 911 parts were used up by the factory they switched to the casting number 930.105.111.2R.

The older 911 part is casting number 901.105.111.1R and were used on the 2.7 liter 911 engines. These have the 4 camshaft bearing and studying the pictures available online they look identical. I "think" Porsche would bump the casting number when they made a change to the part. So the 930 part may has some differences. The 911 part is available for $200!!! from many places, but will it work on a 930 engine? I am tempted to buy one and just see if it is the same. Does anyone know? Do I spend $2000 more to have the 930 part number on my engine?

NEWBIE TIP: I figured out tonight that searching ebay using Porsche part numbers (930.105.021.00 or 930-105-021-00) does not find all the listings because some people don't put the part number anywhere in their listing??? I found and bought the exact chain case (matching casting number) I need by searching for "911 chain case" and carefully scrolling through looking at the pictures. :-)

John

In the '80s we used kerosene to remove the cosmolene in the new car clean-up bay of the Volvo dealer I worked for. Nasty Job.

Great find! I wish I had bumped into that gem.

Recent PET shows that chain case as being the same as for a Carrera and the part number has likely been super-ceded.

Thanks Matt, I believe it is the original paint, which I will do everything I can to save.

I have searched on this before with somewhat inconclusive results, but does anyone know when Porsche switched from single stage to base/clear paints? Does it depend on the color? I may need to repaint a few parts and I want to use the same paint and brand as used originally.

I have an 86 model and it doesn’t have clear coat.
Bought it new and had the hood painted years ago.
