Need reference for carpet
 

Wow, I got wrapped up and spent the last 2 hours reading "Dead man walking" thread http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=322101&perpage=20&highligh t=carpet&pagenumber=1 and almost forgot what I came here for...

I'm installing new carpet in my 930 and I'm putting quite a bit of effort into the prep work. Removed everything that can be removed from the cabin and cleaning it up and getting prepped for install. I picked up some lightweight carpet material from Pep Boys the other day and while it is easy to work with, I am getting concerned about its durability. Given the amount of work that I am putting into this, I don't want to install some crap carpet that will self destruct in 6 months.

Has anyone replaced their carpet (themselves) and if so, what kind of carpet did you use and where did you get it? Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

Well I tried to do it my self and gave up. I bought the best german carpet set made 27 pieces ! I could not do it so I will bring it to a pro. I am pretty handy even put in my own headliner so to give up means to make it look great is near impossible in my book , I also have a roll cage and no rear seats. Good luck. I would also make sure your children , wife and dog are not around to bother you.

I understand your frustration. I started this project by taking on the job of recarpeting the trunk, partly because of it's limited size, partly because I could hide it if necessary, and partly because of the infinite number of curves and crevices that had to be dealt with. I figured that if I could manage the trunk, I could surely manage the cabin.

Is that NOS in the trunk? If so, how is that working for you?

Yes, it is. Long story... Anyway, it does work and actually it works very well. The tank can be turned on from inside the car and the NOS will only spray under full throtle and when the engine is at or above 2200rpm, and then only until the boost comes on. The idea is to remove turbo lag... and it does very well at that.

I usually don't even have the tank in the car anymore but I put it in for this picture.

Very sexy, I like it. so do you have it so it shuts off under boost or WOT above a certain RPM?

Yes, it can be set to shut off at a certain stage of boost, such as 3, 7, 10, etc. I only used it to remove the turbo lag, so I had it set to terminate immediately upon boost. It was indeed an interesting experiment (about 6 years ago) and was installed on the car prior to my having the engine rebuilt. I haven't used it 3 times since the rebuild, and then only to remember how it feels/acts. The car is plumbed and wired for it so I didn't see any sense in removing it, even though it technically isn't used anymore.

BTW you want to use GERMAN SILVER KNIT in a turbo it cost twice as much as domestic pile. If you want to maintain your turbos plush carpet.

OK, back to my grizzled 930... I got most of the old carpet out. Took the roll bar out so that I could get better access to the back seat. After tearing out the old carpet in the back, I found this... It's a molded insulated insert that Porsche put over the metal body to create the "back seats".

Can anyone think of any reason that I shouldn't just tear all of this crap out and glue my carpet directly onto the body of the car? I'm assuming that the noise level will increase but that's not really an issue with me.

Any suggestions?

Never mind, I decided to tear it all out. Don't need the extra weight anyway. hehe, made the mistake of showing my wife. :eek: She's freeking out. I keep telling her that it's gonna be OK but she has her doubts.

That's fabulous work. Interesting that you have carpet everywhere in the car. Mine only has the mats as carpet.. and then some around the center console.

hey whats the small red button and red light on your center console? I only ask because I just removed my console as part of a recarpet job, have what looks like the same two items but don't know what they heck they ever did.

nice work by the way on the carpet. What did you use to pull the molded stuff out?

The bottom switch turns the nos on and off. The top button purges the lines.

I just pulled it out, in pieces. It was relatively easy.

I have no way to know for sure, but I think that I dropped pretty close to 10-15 lbs. by removing the factory carpet and the molded rear seats. The stuff I put back in was very lightweight and couldn't weigh but a pound. The 1/2 gallon of contact cement was the heaviest thing that went back into the job.

Just a heads-up in case you don't already know, but there is a main feed from the battery that is routed right behind this wall. I drilled a hole through the wall and drilled right into it. The drill bit hit the power cable and all hell broke loose. I immediately jerked the drill out but in my haste I broke the bit, leaving half of my bit stuck into the live hot wire. The rest of the bit of course was grounding out against the metal of the car. Smoke and sparks going everywhere! :eek: Made for an interesting 30 seconds.

At first I had no idea what I had hit and it was impossible to see anything from underneath the car. I wound up chiseling a 6" X 6" hole through the metal wall to find out what had happened. Anyway, keep it in mind if you decide to mount anything against that wall. :)

OK, the seats are in, the molding is on and this project is a done deal. btw, the seats aren't really purple, the flash just made them look like that for some reason. :confused:

Did you do the door pockets as well? I heard they are a bear to rip off the old stuff.

Also, what company/source did you finally use?

I liked that your set had full carpet on the floor pans, where most just use mats. Very clean look.

Hi Glenn, yes I did the door pockets too. I pealed the old stuff off and used a torch to burn the residue that played hard to get.

And by company/source I guess you mean where did I buy the carpet? I used "Pep Boys". Hehe... I bought 4 rolls of lightweight carpet material from them and cut the pieces myself.

I've seen carpet material I liked some place and had the same thought. Just never had the balls I guess, but you may be the inspiration necessary.

Clever technique to get the residue off the door panels! Good to know.
