1 Bar Boost Spring 930?
I posted this topic in the 911 forum so I apologize for the re-post. I am looking for some information on adding more boost to my '89 930. I was told by my mechanic that the 1 Bar boost spring is the way to go. After consulting the 911 forum there seems to be some opinion that the 1 bar could cause the car to ping and I should go with a .9. Any ideas or information would be great. I was also wondering if there is an actual Porsche part that the dealer offers to do this and if so what the part# was. I also live in Denver so I am a mile above sea level. Thanks for the help.

Add an adjustable controller but leave the 1.0bar cutout functional. You can run around on stock boost the majority of time but on a nice cool day you can wind it up

1 bar isn't that much boost! HEck, I run 1.15bar on a daily basis! What octane fuel are you using in your car?
I run 98 octane RON (or 93/94 US PON). I guess if you have stock i/cooler and no fuel enrichment, you're in danger zone ![]() You really should upgrade to an aftermarket i/cooler. The OEM unit is a piece of junk!

The best fuel that I can get in Denver on a regular basis is 91 octane. and with very limited stations in town pumping race gas that is 105 octane @ $6.00 plus a gallon I really don't want to takeout a 2nd mortage to put gas in the car.

I would call Pelican and ask if they can get the 1.0 bar spring for you. If not, I know Performance Parts sells them.

Pelican has one for about $104.00 and Performance has one for about $60.00 that comes with a shim to up the boost to 1.2 Bar if the shim is added. I am just not sure which one to get I have a feeling that the one from Pelican is going to be better quality which is what I would prefer. But, I have also been told that a .9 Bar spring is the way to go since the rest of the car is stock. I am just not sure which spring to get. I was hoping that this was a Porsche part that could be obtained through the dealer or could get some feed back from someone who has done this modification. Thanks for all the help |

I bought my 1 bar spring from Performance Products for $58. I was fairly easy to install if you can get the wastegate off the exhaust manifold. I installed mine with two carpenters clamps...My indicated boost went from .6 1/2 to .8 indicated. Did feel a little more umf...I will install a good boost gauge and see what it is reallly at. I hear the stock gauge usually reflects .8 for 1 bar...Calibration issues.
Thanks Bob

Who makes the one that Pelican sells? I would stay away from anything with a shim.
Another option is to get a 46mm Tial Wastegate and you can get springs from .3 bar to .8 bar, and using a combination, get the .9 bar that JW reccomends. Bill |

cdill, I have a .8 bar spring in my car and work in Broomfield if you'd like to go for a ride sometime. When I got it, I had 1.1 bar worth of springs in it. I can tell a major difference changing the springs, but I was worried about engine life at 1.1 bar.

A safer option would be to buy a better intercooler or a K27HFS. I appreciate that a 1bar spring is much cheaper.
I value my engine much higher than the cost of both IC & K27HFS put together though.

![]() Of course, you need decent 93/94 octane fuel... not that crappy 91 Octane stuff.

Merv, I agree. One of the main factors was the octane level in the gas. The motor has had a ton of work, twin plugged etc., so I wasn't so worried about that as much.
At some point and time the Wastegate was hooked up wrong and wouldn't even open, now that made the car fast let me tell you, until of course the overboost kicked in, which was damn quick. I have thought of going up to 1.0 bar (I have the springs for the Tial to do it), we'll see. Bill |

I run a 1.0 spring in my stock three liter with the addition of an intercooler. I'm experiencing some issuses now wher I can't get full boost but it's not related to the spring. I never heard any ping when I did get full boost, even on a hot day. I run 93 R+M octane pump gas. I've never built a motor that required $5 a gallon gas.
