Newbe needs help
 

New to this board and new to Porsche. Need some advice about buying 1999 911. What should I look for? Dealer wants to sell me extended warranty, is that a good idea? Are there companies that anyone has had experince with, endorsed by Porsche folks? Car only has 9300 miles on it and looks like it just came of show room floor. No visible problems, leaks, etc. Runs great. Suggestions? Am I even putting this question in the right place on this board?

I work at a dealer ,get the warranty. You dont want to be hanging parts on these cars COD. Just make sure its agood warranty(bumper to bumper) . If I didnt get a warranty on my Dodge I would of been upside down in it.

Have done a lot of research on warranties and there are tons of them out there. Have not found any good reviews on them either. Any suggestions on which ones are better?

The real dreaded problem with the 996 non-turbo cars is the rear main seal of the engine letting go and leaking all your oil out onto the road.

This happens in almost all the normally aspirated 996's. I believe that Porsche has a fix-it kit available with a better main seal that you can have installed at any dealership.

Personally, I would not buy the car at all unless the dealership agrees to put the upgraded seal in as soon as you buy the car. Period.

Otherwise your new 996 has a better than not chance that it will drop all the engine oil one day, perhaps next week, maybe next year, when you are starting or even driving the car.

All dealers are fully aware of this problem, and if they act like they aren't than they are being dishonest.

The boxster and cayman suffer the same problem, but not the turbo 996, and none of the 993's.

Start a thread about the rear main seal problem on the 996 web forum and see what responses you get. Or do a search.
