Anybody tried to get heat thru to cabin other than welding on exchangers to headers??
Looking at a lot of threads it seems that some issues with headers cracking is where the heat shrouds/exchangers are welded on to the header pipes..In some other cases headers splitting etc inside the heat exchangers where it cant be seen!
in my opinion the engine looks a lot more pleasing to the eye when the headers come without heat i.e no LARGE heat exchangers..So with a lot of us not using our cars in the winter months etc we dont require that much heat in our cabins(some of us also have heated seats ![]() so i am asking the question if anybody has thought of any other ways or set up's for us to get just a little heat into our cabins other than heat exchangers welded on to our headers?? I thought I remember hearing where someone or some shop used one of the oil coolers as a source of heat? I dunno, maybe I dreamed it...

There is a kit to capture heat from the engine oil cooler. Problem is that the engine oil cooler warms up very slowly and produces little usable heat in a blower based system. Unless you can capture cylinder heat then header heat is the only viable option if you really want/need heat.

I have the unit RarlyL8 describes above.
I'm in California so we rarely get temps below 40 degrees but I will tell you this, it works remarkable well, once the motor is at running temps it blows good amounts of warm (not hot) air, I don't even have the foot well blowers. I got mine from Protomotive, it's made of stainless steel. it's very easy to install.

This might be a great idea for those who have no-heat heaers - pics & info would be appreciated!

I think I have a picture in my archives, I'll look this evening.
As stated, if you need warm not hot then that'll do. Personally I need Hot. DE events in January with the windows down require hot!

I found some pictures that are similar to what I got from Protomotive, these pictures are not of my motor.
The best bet would be to call Todd Knighton at Protomotive, his number is (870) 420-3889 ![]() ![]()

Ya beat me to it.
You can see by the pictures that not a lot of heat can be generated from that setup. Better than nothing though.

Can this be installed with the engine in the car?

Just so that I understand where this gets its air source, it relies on the air direct from the top of the fan shroud...the portion of the shrouding designed to deflect air over the engine oil cooler...correct?

Oh, c'mon guys, where's the love for the Webasto units?

Yes, it uses the engine fan air flow that goes through the engine oil cooler.

You know, from the infamous resale perspective, it would be nice to say that your car still had "heat"! To be honest, I really love my exposed exhaust header pipes! I also think not having my primaries surrounded by stainless shrouding (even if there is air being circulated over them from the engine fan), will only help with longevity. I mean for Christ's sake, people brag about having the factory air conditioning in their ads and we all know how well that usually works out (not talking about upgraded components)...my "cold air" lasted about two weeks before needing another R12 recharge! And now I love the uncluttered engine compartment too much to fit it back in...

I have this same unit on mine as well. It provides warm air, not the really hot stuff from heat exchangers. A decent solution for taking the edge off, when using un-boxed headers.
