Basic question....how do you return the oil?
Hey,
Just a random question for the 930 owners out there: How do you return the oil coming out of the turbo to the tank with the turbo mounted so low? Thanks, Pat |
Trough aux pump driven by left camshaft.

An aftermarket solution is to buy an electric pump.
|
Another aftermarket solution is to route the oil back into the crankcase at the lowest point, which is at the oil drump sump plug. Others have drained the oil back into the left side lower valve cover. OEM solution is as BeepBeep noted above.

I Think powerhaus makes a nasty scavange pump that mounts in the stock location, made out of billet aluminum uses has a VW 1.8T oil pump.

Not everyone here was successful with draining the turbo into the case, they tried several locations. Do a search.

As long as the turbo is mounted high enough to be higher than the lowest point of the timing housing that drains back into the crankcase then valve cover or timing cover gravity drain will work. If the turbos are lower than that a pump either electric or mechanical is required. I have twin turbos and mounted my turbos higher than the usual methods in order to use gravity drains. But there is a deal of fabrication and oil tank relocation required.

Hmmm.. my setup locates the GT35R in the same location as any normal KKK on a 930 turbo. I'm draining into the sump drain plug successfully... no oil backing into the turbo and no smoking etc...

my T-4 GT-37R was too big to go in the stock location, so like an idiot I made a 90 degree elbow and clocked the turbo away from the motor. What I didnt take into account was the fact that the flange is on a downward angle, so my elbow just made the turbo sit lower. I had major drain issues and leaking after shutdown- I fixed the problem with a spring loaded check valve in the top of the turbo with a -4 AN line going to it (the stock Porsche oil feed is too much for a ball bearing turbo)
