New Brey-Krause Support System for B Pillars - Discuss
Hey guys - just thought i'd post up my most recent endevor. I've already installed the Harness Truss which is the only DOT approved harness mount for the street, and using my Schroth Profi III's, they're also approved to road use. So this setup makes sense for me.
Added weight for everything including the harness truss is just over 23 lbs, but I'm doing weight savings elsewhere so its all good. Here are some pics of the setup that I'm ordering - they just came out this month... That looks really trick!

Why is your set-up so fancy? I have their harness truss (just the trestle-like portion that spans between the B-pillars) installed in my car from the PO. Literally it just bolts into the two seatbelt mounts on the B-pillars, while retaining use of the OEM belts. Your stuff seems so much more involved (and beefy). How much more structural rigidity do the B-pillar support thingies add to the equation (compared to just harness truss, alone)?
|
Noah: Not sure how much more support it offers as I don't have a figure but I can say that it should beef it up quite a bit boxing it to the lower chassis. Currently all I have is the harness truss as well, that's all that was availible until this month.
The B pillars always seem kind of thin and flimsy so this is a great way to tighten things up a bit and prevent flex with low weight adding. I just got pricing yesterday and ordered the stuff so its on the way to the shop! I'll be sure to report how it all goes. When you say my stuff always seems more involved, I hope that's not a bad thing! I try to keep it all as simple as possible in both application and appearance. |
As an add on to my above post, I notice the harness truss now mounts to the B pillar support brace. This looks to spead out the load over the entire B pillar and not just 1 part of it. I'd think its less likely to stress the B pillars by going this route and transfer more twist into the lower body where it would be resisted at much greater levels.

Gabe: Why not mount a Roll bar from TRE and add side bar's . Since you're using CFG doors ,you have no side protection. just a thought.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1233145331.jpg

Well i've been going back and forth on that one. This way is less weight than a roll bar - so I need to figure out a way to get door bars. But don't worry I will have door bars :)
This setup is important to me as where I live I need the DOT approval for the harness mounts etc. and i'm not worried about a rollover. |
I kept the 3 pt and used harness eyelets in place of bolts, makes it DOT legal + have two systems. Rollover was never my issue either , side impact is . My last car 1980# with full cage .

Was that a turbo? Daymn dude! BTW I sent you a PM.

Just my opinion, but as someone in the motorsports safety business, a former pro driver and instructor, I would never install or wear a 4, 5 (or more) point harness in a car that does not have a roll bar. In the off chance that there were a roll over a roll bar will help maintain the roof's structural rigidity and not the driver's head. In addition, the stock Porsche seats are not designed for racing harnesses. If the harnesses are loose or the seat fails as the result of an impact the shoulder harnesses can slide off your shoulders and become totally ineffective. I have seen this happen to a 944 driver at a Glen DE event resulting in his death. Look at the design of the seat back next time your in your car. Racing harnesses should only be used with one piece racing seats that have holes in them to allow the harnesses to pass through and stay in place when not tight..
Driver safety is not unlike modding a 930 engine. If you are going mod a turbo motor, you can not just put a K27 or increase the boost spring without making other mods i.e. intercooler, fuel delivery and expect to have the motor survive. Driver safety is an integrated, process that requires at the least, a quality roll bar, racing seat, and 5 or 6 point harness. I am also a big fan of HANS devises btw. I have witnessed people be killed in a fully prepped race car at speeds under 150 mph which is the speed my wife's stock 930 will do down the back straight at VIR. As have many of you, I have also seen people survive horrific crashes because of the proper safety gear. Sorry to get on a soapbox but my dearest friend and many time co-driver was killed in a needless racing accident and I get very passionate about driver safety. I can confidently say he was a far better and more experienced driver then 99.9% of us here and if he can die perusing this passion then any of us can. Todd |

Who's checking to make sure it's DOT ok? A state inspection? I know you didn't want a cage but a roll bar with a horizontal bar for your harnesses will work (and help keep you safe in a roll over). |
Todd,
I hear you 100%, and this is my daily driver not a full on racer. Any events I go to will only be DE and that's maybe 1 time per year as I'm not in the US but a few weeks a year. I know full well the risks taken with a car like this - but for everyday use I don't want a roll bar or cage. I will be running a few high speed events for which I'll have a removable roll hoop installed but for now I just want to keep it stiff and light. I would never use a seat that didn't have the proper harness routings and I don't recommend others to do that either, hence why I'm using the GT3's with the anti-sub belt and all proper mounting points as designed from the factory. Where i'm at in Texas they will be looking to see for DOT approval (paperwork which I have) for the belts and mounting setup so I can get her registered. Thanks for all the concerns and I hear them 110% but at the end of the day, a setup like this depends on the use of the car. My seats: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3214/...186da07a_b.jpg |
Let me further add that for any track event or high speed shoot out I WILL be wearing a HANS with a roll hoop and single piece seats with 6 point harnesses.
|
Still no roll over protection though Gabe. That will not get it done, you are not looking to get 10/10 out of that car on the street but I love the feeling of security of having my matter cage with proper padding of course and my five point Schroth harness for the car.
|
Beautiful Gabe. Looks awesome as usual.

Lincoln, yeah I'm actually going to get a full cage installed before the car is 100% done, after seeing the pics of the crash the Porsche Test Driver was killed in the wife asked me if I was considering a cage which made me go over the fence to the cage side of things.
But I thought I'd get this setup to see how it looked etc. Its not supposed to help do anything but stiffen the chassis for spirited street driving to help prevent flex. And for that purpose I think it will do a decent job. Quality of the setup is very nice overall. Thanks JP :) |
I took the car out the other day what a blast at 170mph, I was an idiot doing that on the street but it was wide open and when I closed on a car faster than I expected getting on the brakes felt more like pulling the rip cord on a parachute, the harness/cage definitely made the experience less harrowing.

gabe I think that set-up is hot!!!
i have an older version of their harness bar, no-where near as fancy looking, but the b-pillar mounting bars look like an evolution of what i have.. if/when you switch to a full cage can i put dibs down on this set-up? mine is purely a street light DE car... i don't (have never) done 150mph in the car... and hate having more than 1 passenger (in combination with the use of a harness) the main reason i put the harness bar in there.... this would further eliminate anyone asking. ps- your car looks amazing, loving the headliner and rear-seat delete, is that all custom or did you source a kit? |
Facy - its Appbiz plush carpet set, the headliner is from Robert Budd at 928 Leather Shoppe, all of his stuff (including alcantara) is just so amazing. The guy does great work.
And yeah if you want the BK truss & brace system shoot me a PM and i'll give you my email addy etc. so I can let you know when it comes out of the car, should be within the next month. I hope you're not mounting your harnesses directly to the harness bar - if so that is bad news. The truss is the only thing that can take the load from BK. |
