New cams

While looking for a knocking noise late last year, I removed the cams and rockers and sent them to Performance Developments to be checked out. For whatever the reason, the rockers were out of spec - different lengths most likely due to resurfacing and re-hardening. Anyway, while Neil Harvey and I were talking about cam designs, he said that he has designed a cam that is made to take advantage of the similar mods I have installed. So I bought his cams.

They are .492 intake lift and .470 exhaust lift. The .050 duration is 246.2 intake and 233 exhaust. Let's see what happens.

If anyone would like a set of Dougherty GTII cams, PM me.

Let me know how your new cam works out, seeing as you and I have almost the same thing. Except I don't have an awsome set of Bills heads

If nothing else, these cams look like jewelry - it's kind of a shame to put them where they can't be seen. These cams were cut from billet pieces - brand new lobes. Working with Neil is a true pleasure. He calls these the improved GT2 cams. Let's see what the final results produce.

One other note - I am leaving the world of inductive ignition and going to CDI. When the parts come in, I'll post.

Back when Neil had my parts, I had already purchased my SC cams. And while he mentioned that they weren't a bad choice (Neil is very professional and careful about knocking someone else's product), he said he wished I had talked to him first, as he had some other "custom" cam designs that might have been better. At the time, I was WAAAAYYYY over budget and time in my engine rebuild, so I stuck with the SCs.

But I'm always amazed at Neil's experience!!!! The guy has done it all. He keeps records and files on all the engines his shop has had a hand in, so he's able to tap into that vast library of practical knowlege for his solutions.

Yeah...I've said it before, he's one of the Jedi masters...real deal sage!!! When I got my parts back, he sent me a detailed portfolio with every part that his shop measured, tested, and spec'd! He keeps a copy on file, just in case I ever need something, he knows what it measured when it left!

Here's how the CD ignition conversation went:

Neil: how do you like the inductive ignition?
Don: it's OK, no complaints
Neil: does it idle OK? Are you ok with the torque numbers?
Don: um, well, yah, but what are you getting at?
Neil: you really need to look at CD ignition - in fact, you should consider that before new cams. The idle is superior, you'll feel the torque improvement.......etc.
Don: now you tell me. but I can't afford a CD system - you know, distributor, CD's wires, etc
Neil: tell you what, I have a used dual dist here I don't use any more and I can make you a smokin deal on it - otherwise it'll sit here gathering dust. It already has the fixture for the hall sensor. all you need are two single CD units and wires (i have coils). Tell you what, I'll send it to you next week. I just had it rebuilt so see if it fits and if it does, we'll talk about price. If not, just send it back.

Neil called me today to tell me that in the box he is sending me, he included a timing wheel and crank fixture for a Porsche, a TDC tool for installing the cams precisely, the dual dist, and an M&W CD to look at. He asked if I wanted his digital TDC tool to make sure I had TDC exact. No, that's OK Neil. Last time he sent me a tool, it was a $5000 scope to check a sensor - was paranoid about that thing until he called to confirm it arrived OK.

Didn't give him a dollar to do any of this, including the scope he sent a year ago. Between him and JB Racing, I don't go anywhere else for advice and parts. Neil is a super guy.

I am so glad that others are now seeing what is available to us. Companies like this are few and far between.

I have had the pleasure to know Neil for many years, first as a customer and now I can call him a good friend. He has built many engines for myself over the years along with many repairs to my fathers collection.

You are in good hands when he helps you.

Here's the update on the CDI ignition. Pretty interesting and not as expensive as I originally thought, but maybe I was talking to the wrong people. So for all of you who have wasted spark and an ECU, here is something to consider.

Anyway, the 964 dual distributor arrived as promised, but it did not fit because of the intercooler pipe. This way would have cost me about $1700 for the plug wires, dist, cap, rotor, 2 CDI's and 2 coils. So I called JB Racing about their single 12 pole cap and they said they could make one up just how I needed (no advance/locked down, hall effect sensor mount, 24-1 tooth reluctor) for same price as one off the shelf (this is a deal because of the extra work required). This also means I could eliminate the cam and crank position sensors and use one of them in the distributor (keep it simple = good).

In the mean time, Neil called Bosch (on his own) and found out that the coils I am currently using for wasted spark can be rewired and used with a 6 channel M&W CDI and my ECU to provide sequential spark with CDI. This also means that I can use my existing plug wires too. The end result? Buy one 6 channel M&W and use everything else I currently own. Total cost - about $900. Neil's solution means I buy a lot less from him (coils, wires and 2 CDI's), but we are both satisfied.

Very cool....

I want to echo the kudos showered on Neil Harvey and PD. Don I have an M&W system that is new (dyno only) and I would like to sell it, not trying to step on Neil's toes but if you know someone interested in my M&W pro 14 CDI and six double ended coils, wires and mounting bracket, I would appreciate you passing this along.
