Zork sound... with Stock turbo on 78-80's 930 sound?

Hey Guys,
I was having a good talk with my buddy Ed Bighi.. we were wondering if the stock K26, or 3LDZ. sounds like on a video.. I have heard the k27 on video.. and as Ed and i have come up with is that the K27 is a bit more quiet and has more of the wicked 934/935 sound and the sound of the turbo whistle.. Is it something with the impeller on the k26 3LDZ that causes it to not sound as good.. i just removed mine exhauxt on the 79 930 with stock turbo and fired it up and it was not that great of a sound.. Does anyone have a video of a k26 with a zork? or does anyone have any insight as to why the two would sound so different?

Thanks guys...

since your ehaust is off, try and move the turbine shaft for excessive lateral and side to side movement. if your turbo bearings are toast it might contribute to the sound, or lack there of.

Yeah, I did that.. it's tight.. the turbo is good... so i am wondering if the turbos make a diff in the sound?

A bit of tubing after the turbine (ala zork length) takes away the grotty sound.

The 3LDZ does produce a different sound than the K27 series turbos.
The feedback I have from the sport mufflers in the field is that the 3LDZ produces some drone and a less pleasant tone than the K27. The "Brotherhood of the Zork" folks tell me that the 3LDZ is not as loud as the K27 when using the short pipe. That may have more to do with tone than volume.

I don't have have a zork with a 3LDZ, but I can tell you with stock headers, wastegate and GHL muffler I can hear the turbo whistle and it sounds SWEET! It's on my list by next spring. But you probably can't wait that long.

Yes I do have a K27. It's sitting on my bench as we speak. Also, many different wastegate springs. I just have to get off my winter lazy azz and get out there and do some stuff. I also have a set of GHL headers just waiting to go on. But it may be a while before I get around to all of this. Yes, a zork is my next thing to do.

Sometime this winter I was going to do a zork w/3LDZ and a zork w/K27 with stock headers and stock wastegate. I will put it on youtube but it may be a while.

Call me weird but I want to try lots of combos within the next few months.

Its a Garrett based turbo, but the turbine and compressor housings are custom made to Cadillacs spec. per their ex. lemans project. the internals are custom as well. I'm sure there are better turbos now, but six years ago it was something! other then that I'm still running GHL headers(with a modified waste gate pipe) and the mille miglia muffler. I'm looking to get a custom dual outlet zork made sometime.

I have posted a video of the k27S turbo and GSF headers installed on my 79 930 turbo on "streetfire.net"
Go there and do a search on k27 turbo in the Porsche folder.
I run the car a little with no exhaust or zork tube and you can here the sound. The car was not running correctly at this time as it was too advanced timing, but you get the idea.
Good luck.
Fred
