Shameless Plug and Shout Out to Our Host
My little cottage industry had a growth spurt this week. A couple of long awaited events came together at the same time.
- Our host has picked up the core products in my line of 930 exhaust components, and - My local partner and I now have the facilities and manpower to offer installation and restoration services for air cooled Porsches. This has been a lot of work and a long time coming. My long distance partner, Ben with M&K, has been a tremendous help; could not do it without him. Our first installation was for a local '73RS clone owner who purchased a set of SSIs and an M&K muffler from Pelican Parts. Really woke up his 3.2L Carrera engine in an already quick car. Here is the link to Pelican and a few pictures of our first installation. My wife used to say I was working at night and on the weekends, now she sais I'm off to play. Gotta love it! http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/SubCat/911M-Exhaust.htm http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1240085290.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1240085343.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1240085542.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1240085655.jpg |
Brian,
Is that your shop? Where are you located in Huntsville? Jim |
Congratulations.... You guys deserve it!!
|
Nice work
Brian,
Glad to hear you are doing well in these hard times. And you are working with both Boardwell's across the country which is great. Keep up the quality and you will never have to look back. Bryan |
Thank you!
The property is owned by my local partner. Two complementary companies will run out of it; RarlyL8 Motorsports and Continental Classics. My focus is 911/930 exhaust systems and his focus is restoration. All of us involved are old school pay-as-you-go so we should be in good shape to weather the crappy economy. |
very cool Brian Glad to see that worked out well for you. I also had a local friend of mine just do the same thing (less the 930 line of exhaust) About 20 minutes from me With the same thoughts as you. I think both of you should weather the storm well. Now sometime I will have to drive down and we could do a tech session and finally meet face to face:D
|
Brian, I wish you the best...:)
|
Brian,
Thats the greatest news. Your long time contributions to the forum and your eagerness to help others here is finally being rewarded. Couldn't happen to a more deserving person. Nice to see the good guys win one !!!!!!! Cole |
Congrats Brian, you have a passion for what you do, it shows in your work. All the best.
Jim (in Wisconsin) |
Great for you...Good Luck!!!
Hey by the way, I bought one of your Zorks for my 930 when you started making them, and I love it. My only issue is getting on and off the trailer with a very low track setup, it scrapes pretty bad. I also once needed a flatbed after abreakdoen and had a real tough time getting it loaded without real scrapage. iI know it isn't the traditional 934/935 look, but I am gong to cut my end on an angle "blogna tip" style and it will always clear. Ever thought of offering them like that ans an option, Iknow lot's of guys use them on lowered track cars and might have the same issue. I want to maintain the top line so as notcto melt the bumper but trimming the bottom 1/2 won't effect that. |

Yes the Zork is not very compatible with car haulers. What I did with mine was beat it mercilessly with a hammer until flat oval instead of round, ha! I thought about a through-the -valance-Zork but did not know how well it would sell; may revisit that sometime. THE big deal right now is preparing the headers for mass production. They'll be the only 321 headers on the market that I know of so should be a hit.
The new shop is strictly for mechanic work and restorations. R&D, assembly and shipping of my exhaust products will remain at my shop. Much easier to work nights and weekends as well as run out and throw a package together immediately if need be. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1240113342.jpg |
Brian, I cant wait to come and pick up mine!!! Also, What kind of welding will you be using ( TIG I assume) and will you be back purging the tubes with argon or another gas while the welding is done?

Thanks, please do. |
As I dont want to get off track on Brians post...Pm me your email addy...and I will send you a pic of what I am talking about
|
Looking forward to the headers, as well
|
Congrats Brian! I recently turned down a job offer in Huntsville and if things were different I would have loved to move there and get to hang out and support your business.
I spent several weekends in Huntsville over the past 6months. Once again congrats to you. Regards - Yasin |
Congratulations Brian. It's good that you are passionate about what you are doing.
Are you going to make your own headers from scratch or are you going to use the SSI's? |

Yasin you should give me a holler next time in town, I can show you some awsome Porsches!
I do design, assembly, final QC, minor polishing, installation, shipping and customer service. Ben handles the manufacturing which is procurement, fixturing, welding and polish. This arrangement has worked very well for us. Headers are same, my design and Ben's magic. Hope to have them ready for production by summer: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1240155374.jpg |
Congrats. All the best!!!!!!

They look cool. Will they be true 100% equal length? Will you do ones for turbo and ones for N/A 3.2 carrera? |
Yes, true equal length primaries with deviation of +/- 1.5%. I have a box FULL of 321 bits and pieces that were scrapped in that effort.
Yes, will handle 930 (1.5"), 911(1.5"), Carrera (1.625"), and big bore engines (1.75"). 930 will have equal length secondaries as well. All will be 321 stainless. Still have a lot of work to do but that is the plan. The above picture is the prototype, wait until you see the finished product. ;) |
Congrats Brian!!! Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a lot of long hours and hard work pay off. With all that free time now, no problem making 'Turbopalooza' in June then, right?;)
|
Brian, is there any benefit in making one primary longer? Some old british cars benefitted from this. I have no idea about the timing on these engines.
|
There are 2 opposing camps when it comes to header primary sizing for the 930.
- Short unequal length primaries such as B&B/GHL/OBX/FabSpeed, etc. - Long equal length primaries such as SSI/MarcoManzie/Holcomb/RarlyL8 The theory is that short unequal length primaries just dump the pulses to the turbo as fast as possible which should reduce lag. To me that is just the easy way out, even though 934 headers follow that same basic design. For a race car it works and that is fine. For a street car you need off-boost torque. N/A engines show a bump in mid range torque and HP by timing the pulse. With a turbo you get even more because you can also take advantage of velocity and pulse timing to more efficiently operate the turbine. Corky Bell lined that out in his book 30+ years ago. Now we have twin volute systems and close tolerance turbos with much higher efficiency. Don't know about having one primary longer than the others. The boxer 6 is an even firing engine so I don't see a benefit. Doesn't mean there isn't one, I just don't see it. I consider Turbopalooza a must-do. I've got 2 prototype systems that will be on a couple high powered cars in attendance. Magazine shoots, turbo monsters, strippers and booze? Miss THAT? Every dog here aught to be in that hunt! I just got my cool high-geared Euro 915/67 Wevoized and need to swap it into the Posermobile. Have a laundry list of things to do "while I'm in there". Work comes first but I'm doing everything in my power to get the car ready for this event. |
Congrats Brian, you guys definitely deserve the opportunity to grow and R&D more stuff to help us all. Remember to always, regardless of how big you get, keep your high quality service and standards.
|
The present formula works very well and I have no intentions of changing it. I love development work and talking to folks about these cars. Installation is becoming more of a need all the time and my partner now has the space so that works well. We have a local old-school air-cooled Porsche mechanic on board who has forgotten more about these cars than I will ever know. The plan is to just let things evolve as time permits and pay as we go. Owe nothing and don't push it. If the business is allowed to compromise the passion we have failed.
|
With that approach to business there is no room for failure... Go for it!!!!
|
Congratulations Brian!
I'm curious why you're not using the Burnstainless collectors? They're expensive, but so are Porsche headers. |

Seems funny that you guys have never met face to face with all the work you do together. That is the internet for you! |
Internet, UPS/FedEX/USPS, QuickBooks, e-mail and cell phones are all it takes to go global.
It's a whole different world than the one I grew up in. About a week ago I had breakfast with a few fellow PCA members and one asked me if there were enough 930s in Huntsville to support a business. I chuckled and told him I've sold more mufflers in Africa than Huntsville. |

Cool! For those of you who haven't seen a Burns collector, they are worthy of an art gallery! A cutaway collector from their website: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1240259075.gif |
As Ben stated we are working on it ...
Cost is a significant factor as I don't want to price the product out of reach for the typical enthusiast. We do have a couple of special projects going right now using that design. Will post more on that later. ;) |
Brian and Ben: My hearty congratulations to you both for the expanded venture into being a supplier to Pelican.
Having personally purchased and used your product line, it's the sort of quality and build that is worthy of being carried in the Pelican inventory of available products. I'm sure you folks will do well in the future and expand from a "cottage" to a slightly larger facility. I've yet to see any better TIG than Ben's. chuck |
Brian, all the best with your new shop! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif
|
Good luck to you and props for having the balls to go out on your own and start a bizniz that follows your passion. Nothing beats looking forward to going to work in the morning.
Great work on your stuff too. If I was in the market I would definitely buy your exhaust. Are you also selling turbos now that IA is gone? |
