AFR and/or EGT gauge recommendations

We tried to install an AFX AFR meter in my '77. It boots when the key is in the on position and seems to work properly until the engine actually starts. Once the engine starts the gauge keeps freezing as if it does not like the power source. We were about to run it directly to the battery but discovered that voltage drops to 11.5 volts even at the battery at idle.

Today the battery and alternator system passed testing. Another 911 is having similar problems with an AFR gauge, but his symptoms are less frequent. Since I don't sit idling other than at red lights I've decided to try a different AFR system.

1. Can anyone recommend another AFR meter?
2. Can anyone tell me what exhaust temp is normal for a turbo-charged 911? I'm a strong believer in Exhaust Gas Temp gauges but need some baseline data.

Thanks, in advance,

Chris

AFR recommendation

I have one of these and I like it.

http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products.php

Mine is the permanent install XD-16. I had some issues with mine (all my fault). I didn't have an adequate ground and had the power source to a constant, not the ignition (on/off) which I needed. Also, your volts are low. At the battery it should be around 12.5 - 13.2 at idle. I would check all of your electrical connections. I would say all of your issues will be related to that 11.5 volts.

I'm guessing that EGT's should not be more than 1400 but I would guess it is much lower. I am only guessing here. I'm sure someone will chime in and help.

Best of luck,
Bryan

I use the PLX multi display gauge for boost, AFR and EGT, very precise and quick responding gauge, I really like it:

for this mod you need to send your tach to dave, Dave@C2turbo.com

Dave

I forgot about Dave. I purchased my AFR gage before I was familiar with this set up. He does a very nice job. I would go that route if I was doing it all over again.

Thanks for posting gogomobil.

I got an AEM wideband and a Defi EGT gage- they work pretty well for me. I know the Defi's are a little ricer, but they are cool because they have a playback function that becomes very usefull in diagnostics

I use an Innovate DB AFR gauge connected to the LC-1 controller. Likewise, I had issues with power supply and had to run a larger switched positive lead from the fuse panel to the gauge.

I've used the Zeitronix ZT-2 for the past 4yrs and still like it. You can log AFR, EGT, Boost and others. Several display options, or just use your laptop for logging. It even has a separate module that can be programmed as a warning, or turning off/on different devices.
