oil temp update

With 2 front fender coolers (naca ducts direct to encased coolers w 3" air outlet behind front wheels ), and no engine oil cooler or front center mount cooler....

75* ambient
212* average running temp
138*- 158* at 2nd front oil cooler

These are results while driving moderately on windy roads with a few WOT moments. I'm considering a doing a track day but am concerned that running the car between 4k and 7k rpm's for 25 minutes a shot will bring temps well over 250*.

How much hotter does a high HP 930 run at the track than on a spirited country drive?

My first experience at the track was with using 1 front fender cooler instead of 2. It was a hot day and temps were well over 250*.

Do I need the damn valance and center mount cooler?

Looks like it. I only see 210 on the street in very heavy stop-go traffic (essentially stationary for 15 minutes or longer) or ambients over 100.

Does a 54*-74* difference between engine oil temp and front oil cooler temp seem normal?
My engine oil temp sensor/ gauge reads at the center (nearly invisible) line. I assume this is 212*

For what it's worth, I hit approx 240 degrees last summer with ambient temps around 85 degrees and I have a front mounted oil cooler

With the right front fender cooler, engine cooler and center mounted cooler with a twin plug motor around 400 crank hp 7.0 compression at 1.1 to 1.2 bar boost running AFRs not much over 11 was 220 tops around 90 degrees last year for 20 min run. On the street it runs around 180.

212 seems too hot for the street. Your thermostat should open around 180-190, I would confirm this. Might also explain the temp differences at the front coolers.

Our 3.4 325 h.p. n.a. race car with no engine cooler and two carrera fender mounted coolers with the fronts enclosed each going to a 4" duct in the front spoiler runs 190 in 80+ d at the track. On the street it gets up to 180.

My thermostat doesn't open till 220*. I don't think this is a problem since I want any water build up to burn off. Then the temps quickly drop between 200 and 212.

Harold,
My front temps are 73* until the thermostat opens. Then they slowly move up to 138*-158*.

At 1 bar, I am running around 550 hp. I don't bother turning it up to 1.3 as the knob is set to do. She's gonna run hot, but I want to know what the big HP guys experience with temps.

I know that I've posted about oil temps before, but now I've made some adjustments and before I go wrenching around again and dropping more loot, I want some feedback. Sorry if it seems redundant.

Make sure you are getting air to the coolers. You say you have the naca ducts run, but where does the sir come in from? Do you have enough openings? Is the duct work big enough?

Good idea above on checking the t-stat to make sure it's functioning properly.

I used to feel pretty proud of my newly finished oil cooling system (street car) for my 930 finding the temps never got above 190. Since I only drive about 5,000 - 8,000 miles per year, it goes a long time between oil changes. My first oil change came about August that year. When I drained the oil, about a cup of water came out with it. It seems the new coolers never let the oil raise above 212 degrees to boil off the moisture that accumulated. Since my car will sit for weeks at a time, rust is a real possibility. So, I now make sure I run the car over 220 for periods of time to ensure moisture is boiled out. Besides, the oil I use works best between 190 and 240 and there is no mechanical reason not to run 200 - 220 degrees.

Don,
Do you have a manual control over the thermostat?

Bill Rudtner, who built my engine just told me that I can run it up to 245* on the track. He races and builds these things all the time. His personal racecar is a 930 with a 3.6, efi, with either carrera manifold or individual throttle bodies. 700hp. He runs one big center mount cooler, with no other.....but also rebuilds his engine after every third track season. I was a passenger while he drove around the track. What I learned on that fine day is....I have no idea how to drive on a track.
