New 930 owner... intro, and a couple of questions

Just bought my first 930, an '89... you may have seen it on ebay a few weeks ago. A friend recommended this forum as the place to get good info from well informed owners.

My initial impressions are that it was lowered too much by the PO. I'm wondering where I might find information on ride height adjustment procedures for both the front and rear.

Airflow plate... when I blip the throttle, I hear a distinct clicking from the engine compartment. I feel certain that it is coming from the CIS airflow plate. Any advice?

Finally... the car was fitted with (blush) turbo twists when I bought it. These need to be replaced as soon as possible. It seems that there are a variety of widths and offsets used on these cars. I'd like advice on rim width, tire size, and appropriate offset. I'm not looking to stuff the largest possible tire under the car... just reasonable and rub-free.

Any advice on any of these topics would be greatly appreciated.

Do you hear the clicking as you blip the throttle? Tap it and click...come off and you hear another click...?? Tap it fast and you get a click, click.

The clicking it exactly as you describe. It must be something intake related, IMO. From my previous CIS experience with other German cars, it seems like it must be the airflow plate, or something related to it.

OK... so what tire size/rim width? Offset for my new wheels? I'm going to try and find a set of the Ruf wheels, or Speedlines from (I think) the 964.

I had to go through that process on my car, although I removed that portion of the intake from the engine to replace those parts it wasn't a difficult job. If you don't know when the last valve adjustment was you can combine the two jobs to save a little time.

That's a good post on a easy fix-it job. Never knew it existed. I just last night changed out both the top and bottom seals as routine maintenance since I had the entire recirculation valve assembly off the engine. Dave, that clicking is a very common symptom and not to be concerned with, but it is annoying. The piston actually contacts only the bottom of the two seals (as shown in the post's pictures) when in it's relaxed position (it will retract when engine vacuum is at it's greatest - when the throttle butterfly is closed such as during shifting). When retracted, it lets all the pent-up boost recirculate back to the front of the turbo so as to prevent turbo stall due to back pressure. Relatively simple to get to and replace.

The '89 G50 930 is a special car, you started off at the top!
Failed BOV seals are common with age and easy to fix.
Ride hieght looks nice, does it rub or hit low driveways?

Ladies & Gents, may I introduce you to my longtime bud from the Audi circles Dave Dawson - known for amongst other things his ~ 400AWHP urS4 and some monster 'commuter' A4 1.8t from hell. MADMAN extraordinaire 8-). It's kinda funny here Dave, talk of high psi is somewhat bewildering - I chuckle to think of my former 22.5psi or the, what, 26+psi you're likely running in your i5-20vt, via K26 hybrid. Different' birds these things are.

Great you found us Dave, you'll find this gang to be beyond knowledgable / experienced, and all around just damn cool. Really fun core group here of like minded enthusinuts. No worries guys - he's not as messed up as me... only when it comes to builds.

Just as I was clicking on your post I cringed that - oh crap - I'd forgotten to warn you you'd be lambasted alive here for posting an intro post WITHOUT A PIC!!! Phew, you dodged heh heh. We're pic hoors here it seems. I'm sure everyone remembers the car, as the ad was mentioned here and most agreed it was poorly written with bad pics. Turns out the car's a gem! Awesome score, I've nevereverever seen another metallic green '89 certainly.

As much as I'd be rushing to rid those insipid wheels (no offense to others who may enjoy them, they nauseate ME tho)... hang tight here and surf daily for the deals that frequently pop up. It's pained me a NUMBER of times how many good deals have passed that I was in NO position to take advantage of. A set of Ruff classics and a set of powder coated Fikse FM-1s recently IIRC. Surf around a bit, maybe the Fikse's might still be around.

Taste is subjective obviously, but the Ruf's, any Fiske, HRE, Kinesis K5, BBS LM (don't you run reps on the urS?), Linsay Racing or Jeff Alton 17" 'Fuchs', etc. all suit these cars' lines, styling, genre, etc. IMO. Can't go wrong, unless 18's - too big for the character of the car - least I think.

VERY much looking forward to 'where' you take this thing. World beware heh heh. And watch out for Johnny L out thar - seems you've had a challenging 12mo. d'oh 8-).

Excellent... I should have guessed it could be the BOV. I have plenty of experience with those, but never seen an integral unit, and I've certainly never run into one that is so old that its seals have turned into carbon crystals. This makes perfect sense with the throttle blipping sounds, and also may explain my .5 bar max boost reading, as boost is surely leaking past the failed seals.

Ride height... nothing rubs in any way, under any conditions. The day I bought it started a weekend of tossing it around the mountains of northern CA... lots of fun twists, turns, and dips. I never heard anything make contact.

However, essentially everything on the underbody is sitting about 4 inches above the pavement, so I'm thinking contact is inevitable unless I bring it up a tad. Also, my exhaust pipe outlets have been neatly beveled from contacting the ground. I'd like to end that trend... as it causes me to enter and exit every parking lot at .005 miles per hour.

Green brother... it's green. But in many circumstances, or even slight shadow, it does look black.

This is what I have on my Carrera widebody. 8" and 9" Fuchs with 35' and 45' along with 2.25 inch spacers. They fit perfectly and you can tell we did not resort to really wide tires on too skinny wheels.

I think your ride height looks great. Take alook at mine and yours lifted will resemble this.

Yeah...I "rubbed" my drip tank and cracked it just below the flange...needless to say, it's a good way to drain your oil on the fly.....low might look cool, but in the long run it's dicey...especially if you go on any of the P Car scenic tours that hit the back country. They don't seem to have extra drip tanks up in them thar hills.
