How to Remove..............

How the hell do I remove this airbox? If I take off the 2 nuts on the mounting strap by the manifold on the right side and the front and rear nut on the left side the entire assembly will not lift past the engine bay metal nor the manifold.

What if any role do the 2 bolts pictured play?

How about the attached hose shown?

I would think there should be a simple way of doing this, but it looks like I am missing something in the big picture. I would venture to guess the only way to this is by dropping the engine, but I really don't want to if I don't have to.

I need to get the box off to check all the vacuum and fuel lines and also check inside the box itself.

Yep, you have to remove those 2, 10mm bolts from the top of the air box. They attach the unit to the manifold. Yep, that little hose also needs to be detached. There is also a hidden nut back behind that same little hose only slightly lower, it attaches to a stud on a bracket. There is a large oil breather hose on the back side of the air box, slightly to the passenger side. It is attached by a hose clamp & also fits into a little "u" shapes support piece on the back side of the air box. Plus of course the large hose on the drivers side of the air box.
The 2, 10mm bolts on top are a pain in the ass to remove, so be patient. They are even a bigger apain to put back in!!!!
Good luck.

A ratcheting 10mm box end wrench gets at those 2 - 6mm bolts, and sometimes you can just fit a thin 1/4" drive ratchet with 10mm socket in there. Or just take your time with a 10mm open end/box end wrench.

Those are 6mm bolts with 6 point 10mm wrench size heads. Trivial, but if you went to bolt supply store and asked for a 10mm hex head bolt, you'll get a bolt with 10mm diameter threads and most likely a 17mm wrench size head.

Looks like that one hasn't been disturbed in a while.
If it's a paper filter element there just might be something living in there..

Hey look on the bright side, you at least did not have to remove an intercooler also! Your car must be a 3.0L '76-'77?
I now see from your picture that the big hose on the drivers side has been already removed and plugged with a red plug.

This is why so many of us ditch the stock air box and go with a different air cleaner arrangement.

Yes, '77 3.0

And yes, I would look into a different air cleaner assembly, but this one is not sticking around long enough. Car (factory 930) is either getting parted or sold complete in the very near future. Look for it in a theater near you. (ie: Our hosts classifieds)

You can fit a short fat K and N filter directly on air sensor by making a small notch in the plastic lip of the filter to fit the air/fuel meter screw.

PM me if you want one cheap.
