930 Top Speed?
The post about the Speedos got me to thinking. What's the real top speed for a 930?
I've read several different pieces of literature that say they top out in the 150-160 mph range. I have a hard time believing that. My 81 Euro car is basically stock other than a 1 bar spring, and a performance header/exhaust system. I was out playing(boosting) a few weeks ago and got on the gas. As soon as I hit 3rd gear I tried to look down at the speedo (not easy to do while holding for dear life), and before I knew what happened I was in the 130 mph range while still in 3rd gear. So I can only assume the car would easily exceed the top speed of 150-160 mph that I've read about. I'd imagine the thing would approach 200 mph if I had the place, and nerve to do it. So how fast will these things go? |

Had mine up on stands recently with the rear wheels removed and thought "mmm, 4th gear, 7krpm would =? ". I don't think it would do it in real world situation but I can tell you mine is geared to 300kmh at 7k. It looked preety good with the speedo hitting 300. I was going to take a photo but the damn camera batteries **** themselves as the flash was about to go off! DOH. I'll do it again next week with charged batteries.
And Porsche have a tendancy to understate the top speed of their cars.

I seem to remember a gearing chart in Bruce Andersons performance handbook which showed a top speed of 190ish at redline in 4th gear. Now whether your engine has the power to hold redline in 4th gear is another story. I know many turbo owners who have seen far beyond an indicated 160 on their speedo...

The car is geared to run 180mph at 6500 rpm with stock 16" tires and stock gearing.
However, like rsrfan says, you will probably run out of power to get there before running out of gearing/rpm range. The speedo reading reads about 10% high anyway so in reality, the speedo is saying 120mph, but your traveling 110mph or so. Why Porsche calibrates it this way is wierd, and a little of a let down since you like to think your travelling 135 on the back straight at Watkins Glen when in reality your "only" going 120mph.

I have personally run 182 mph at Spokane Raceway Park (unusually long front stretch), still pulling pretty strong but ran out of room in a built CIS based 930 at 480ish hp, a G50/50 transmission on 315/35-17 rear tires. The speedo was indicating 186, I figured the speed from revs and gearing and tire rollout. If anything, it was conservative as tires grow a bit at those speeds.
The body was nothing special with full rain gutters, a Ruf valance, 993 type mirrors and a 3.8 type wing. I'm confident with unlimited distance the car would have run at least 195.

I only have a factory 160mph speedo. So far I haven't exceeded it, but there is no doubt I could easily. With the modest modifications listed below, I think 170-175 is a conservative guesstimate of my true possible top speed.
I base this on the fact that I have hit 91 in 2nd (10 more than it should do stock in 2nd from what I read) and that at 150mph she is pulling strong. My speedo is accurate to within about 5-7mph up to 120, after that I have never comparing it to the GPS or my G-Tech. I have verified the speedo and G-Tech with 2 GPS units and find it consistent. Whatever their top speed...it's one noisey scarey ride...ya gotta love it! ![]()

I think I've pegged my 180 speedo 3 or 4 times over the years. I actually even timed a measured mile in 19.8 seconds which if I recall puts it over 180. I can't imagine what those guys that can do over 200 are thinking. I know it's all relative but man past 175 it just gets weird.

I will be testing the car on October 11 at a One mile event, I'm extremely curious to see how fast I can go,any ideas how fast I will be able to go with the stock G-50 Gear box ?

I've done 159 mph (GPS, not speedo, verified) in my mostly stock Turbo 3.3 and it was still barely pulling. The older wide-body whale tail 930 is an aerodynamic brick. The power is there, but it just isn't sleek enough to cut through the atmosphere efficiently. - Mike

I can jump in here with some actual data. With my car with a 4 speed 930 gearbox and on the stock 16" wheels fitted with new SO2's, basically stock size, at 7000rpm i was at an exact speed of 187.4mph.
![]() I have now fitted RUF Speedlines and put 285/45/17's on there. My Speedo was WAY out before, i would hold the car at 70mph on the clock and the AX22 would say 62mph. Now with these wheels fitted it's almost spot on. I've done dozens of 60-130mph runs, and at the rev limiter it hits 133mph in third with stock wheels. You can see from this run that the top speed before i hit the limiter was roughly 133mph ![]() It's been too damp to do any runs with the new wheels, i will be doing another VMax event this year hopefully so will be able to report back at some point with that. The details of the instrument i'm using is here http://www.race-technology.com/description_2_78.html So as you can see it's accurate, the stock speedo with stock tires (certainly on european cars) is WAY out!

my speedo reads 75mph while GPS confirms 69mph with the stock 4 speed box and fuchs 16 inch rims. then at 150mph indicated that translates to 138mph actual.
seems like 9% error on the speedo with the standard 16 inch tires. Now bear in mind the stock 79 930 had a cd of 0.41 which is very bad in comparison to later years making top speed very aero limited.

I buried my stock '87 160mph speedo down to the nether regions of 6:00 or so and lifted, had a few hundred rpm's left in the tach and 'some' pull (slight downhill).
I figured that to be an indicated 173 or so, 10% correction of 160s. Oddly, my OE size tires the speedo read way off, it's nearly spot-on now (verified with those FUN roadside radar opportunitie... er... warning signs) with my 225F / 265R's, go figger. |

Clocked at 218 mph (using a radar gun). Ok, I was in a twin turbo, 2150 lbs, 836 bph 935 at Daytona just before braking into turn 1. I don't recall the gearing we were using at the time (would have to go back and check the notes) but I was at redline in fourth at about 1.4 bar of boost. We figured we could get it close to 230 with enough room and the proper gearing. The car was actually faster then the 962's in a straight line. We could not keep up with them in the corners though due to the 962's superior aero package and ground effects. So the basic design is capable of being as fast as anything out there. Given money and guts (read lack of common sense).

barring Daytona, where are you guys reaching these top speeds?
i thought michigan had lenient speed enforcement.....man. i would be terrified of jail time at those speeds. got mine to 140mph at the Glen last weekend though, completely legal like.

Most of mine is done at a place called Bruntingthorpe, where they have a 2 mile runway, usually on VMax events. I also pop over to the continent and play on the Autobahns
