Ignition question
Lately my 88 turbo has been acting up. I'll turn the key and nothing. I'll try it again and it will fire right up. Next time I'll turn the key and there will be a hesitation but a 1/10th second later it will fire up. Now yesterday I pulled into a busy intersection and the car just quit (talk about embarrassing). The car kept trying to start but couldn't get past making that rararararar sound. Two guys pushed me to the side and after thanking them I tried it again and it started right up and I made it the 2 miles home.
The car gets looked at Wednesday and it case there is a problem with the ignition I'm wondering what ignition options there are for my car. I seem to recall there is an aftermarket or "high performance" option. Could you please tell me what the ignition options for my car are and what any pro's or con's of them are? Thanks in advance. Look down several posts.
There is the option of the MSD6AL alone and with boost/timing options. The MSD gives good idle and up to ~3k rpm spark due to multiple sparks. Has a soft touch rev control that shuts down cylinders so that none get loaded up with fuel. |

If the problem is ignition, I recommend MSD's P/N 6520 digital programmable 6AL-2.
Pro's would be that it can be programmed to do anything your engine needs as far as ignition demands are concerned. Con's would be you or your wrench are going to have to spend a bunch of time to install, understand, decide what you want to do with existing distributor's timing mechanisms (disable should be a strong consideration) and finally program to get optimum results. If you're a DIY individual, you will be hard pressed to beat this system ($410-list). If not a DIY, $410 will be but a small down payment to a proper end result.
