It's hard to tell from the photos but up close it almost looks like a caricature of a widebody. Those steamroller tires jetting out from standard flanks and giant naca duct decklid wing was a sight to behold.
The car came off as a brutal militant science project with its raw and rough fabrication. Something that would be hard to restore or replicate without it come off as contrived now I reckon. Truely sad that is now lost. Last edited by panzerfaust; 03-29-2018 at 11:21 PM.. |

Speaking of RSRs....
This 1974 Carrera (1 of 200) was purchased new at Brumos. The owner asked for more horsepower. Porsche had available at the time an RSR engine kit, of which apparently six were sold. So this car had the 2.8 RSR engine and transmission installed as well as Recaro leather seats. Approximately 300 HP. Fate of the other five kits appears to be unknown. This car has all paper work from day 1 and is undergoing a thorough restoration in the USA. Sorry for the crappy photo. No muffler; straight pipes.

Interesting video on the R5 recreation. (That is what I am calling it now anyway). It was listed beneath the pictures on the French website.

That is pretty cool. The documentation will really help the value.

Anyone know if the R5 chassis had the fan mounted on the top of the motor (a la the 930) or in the standard position. I've collected 2 pictures that appear to show both configurations in the 2.1 turbo cars (see below). Thanks in advance.

Found another shot of the R5 in what looks to be the original configuration. Note the fiberglass quarter window appear to be more in the vein of the other 2.1 turbos. And different from the more recent on-track photos of the R5 re-creation.

Fellow Pelican and shooter of the pic of the R5 chassis in Charlotte (Dave Pizi) just sent me this Youtube link via PM. Here is a 20 minute long video detailing the "restoration" aka "tub transplant" of the R5 car by what I am assuming is Friesinger. LOTS of details. Pretty cool to see what was done to reinforce and stiffen the chassis. Looks like the donor tub had holes in the front that needed repair. Maybe for through-the-body sway bars? Anyway, easily the most details on the post-"restoration" of the R5 body to donor tub I have seen.
I need to watch it again as I think they show a close up of the serial number plate. (Watched it on my phone -with multiple annoying ads) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-XYE8x6Xls&feature=youtu.be

A great article on both cars was published today by Classic Driver

![]() The author, IMHO goes easy on the person who decided to deconvert the car from the very FIRST turbo 2.1 back to RSR spec. He describes it as "somewhat questionable decision". It is good to know the recreation car has a "/2" stamped into it. I wish Gunnar Racing had just bought the damn car back in 2001 rather than deconvert it. (Easy for me to say, I know). And unless someone can show a picture otherwise, I also believe this is the first 911 with the continuous-curve "turbo" flares too.

Managed to reach a French photog who had shot the car earlier in 2019. Sent me some motor pics. The R5 has a topside fan. The intercooler makes me feel better about my welds.

Merry Christmas! I recently made a post on Facebook about this car, sharing my original pictures I received from my friend David Pizi when the car passed through Charlotte in the early '90's. Ryan Snodgrass, the author of an award-winning book on the evolution of the Porsche Turbo (https://parabolicapress.com/products/porsche-turbo-3-0-book) replied with this picture of the R5 under construction in Zuffenhausen. Interestingly, it turns out Ryan was actually residing nearby in Asheville, NC in the early 90's about the same time the R5 was in Charlotte. Fairly interesting coincidence and VERY interesting shot of the R5 under construction. Thanks Ryan!

Adding this link to this thread for posterity's sake. I stumbled across this site that does a good job providing more details about the R5 chassis's first life as an RSR (it was wrecked at the 'ring) and its subsequent life as the first turbo racer, then known at "the tank" as it was heavier than its short-hood brethren. Good read.
