Emission Tester Drops Transmission
Wow---never thought one of these stories would include me. Denver based Porsche tech took 86 930 to Air Care Colorado for required 2 year check after tune up. The emissions tester placed car on the rollers, started in 1st then used both hands to ram it into 2nd--noise caught everyones attention. Bottom line is the transmission will not shift into 1st,2nd or reverse--back to the shop on a flatbed. While I'm waiting for the initial contact from Air Care I would be interested to hear from anyone who has had to deal with damage caused by an emissions center.

Probably the same person that popped the front hood on my 930... and then asked me where the engine was. Which Air Care was this so I know which one to STAY AWAY from?

The Air Care here in Castle Rock has always treated mine with kid gloves.

Here is the update-----repeated calls to "Rose" the claims adjuster and no return call as of this writing. P tech filed claim at site and wrote it up pretty well but we all know how far one persons account will go with any bureaucratic cesspool.
This was station #E5003 in Sheridan. I have had this 930 for 9 years---41k and mint so getting pretty agitated by the lack of response. I had one previous issue with them at the Ken Caryl station when they tried to put the front tires on the roller. TG |

Assuming it was Greg or Brian (tech) that took it over there for you? Hope this all works out in your favor...

Thanks-----I'm really trying hard to not blow up----a little easier at my age than in my youth. Lot of people in this economy would love to trade for this problem. I am finding out that the P tech,(or anyone), could have requested a tail pipe test.

The AirCare stations in Wisconsin won't even touch a porsche or ferrari. In the past, they eyeballed it, and declared it exempt. I am sure luck has a lot to do with it...
Years ago a smog tech asked me "Does that car have a reverse gear lock-out? Because if it doesn't, we can't drive it and its exempt..." ![]() Ever since then I always point out that my car lacks a "reverse gear lockout" ![]() |

I have heard that some of them here in CO will do the same... not touch them at all because if this exact reason... but then again the state does need to collect every penny it can

Round one is on----Air Care demanded the car be transported to a different shop due to "conflict of interest". Not only a ridiculous assertion but illegal in the state of Colorado according to my attorney and insurance carrier. I'm sensing that their self imposed rules and regulations are going to really make the process difficult. I don't post often but will keep this updated to at least lend information for anyone else who,(hopefully not), is confronted with a similar issue.

Just make sure you get to pick the shop that it goes to, and that it is a P-shop... there are quite a few good ones in the state, and local in the Denver area. That way you at least know that it is being looked at by someone that understands these cars.

You're right Walt----It floors me that anyone is so willing to side step even the initial requirements to determine who is at fault. I could really go on and on with this---The author Ayn Rand predicted all of this over 50 years ago---government agencies that will operate well out of the bounds of common sense.
I'm getting no response from Air Care after telling them that the car will not be moved from the shop and they need to schedule an inspection as soon as possible. TG |

Finally have an update on this. Air Care remained totally unresponsive until I called the Colorado Dept of Revenue. They demanded Air Care send a tech to meet at the P tech shop to review the now disassembled transmission. Second gear was clearly damaged on half of the teeth---pointing to the abusive shift and not normal wear. Their "tech" certainly tried to find a way out but in the end they are picking up the nearly 6k repair bill. Of interest---had I installed a short shift kit or heavily modified the car this battle would probably have continued to the point that insurance would have been the last resort to get the shop paid and the car released. Eurosport,(Greg @ Reed), sure knew their stuff on this one and get the accolades for the positive response from Air Care. Still have to get the e test after all of this!

Glad to hear that Greg, Reed, etc. were able to help on this. They are a great set of guys over there for sure. Now get that car back on the road...

Garrison, is your 930 with them now? Greg has communicated with the state to get a special tail pipe emission done on turbos. I do not know if that has been formally agreed to as of yet.
