Turbo 3.3 engine without intercooler
 
Hi

Is it possible to run the 930 3.3L (1980) turbo engine without the inter cooler?
If so, how will the engine respond?
I want to fit it in a 1973 carrera-look car without wing.

I wouldn't run it without an intercooler, you should get a cooler fabbed up to fit under the tail you plan to fit, here are a few that have been done similar to what you may need, obviously some better than others

The Carrera look you want is far out-weighted by the cost of melted pistons.
It has been done but not without some type of charge cooling.

What's your time frame?
The custom intercooler on the white car (middle picture) in our handiwork. We're starting on another one for a car coming in July (1976 930 with Carrera ducktail and our EFI).

Yes it can be done. Porsche did it with the 3.0 turbo with a little lower compression and .6 bar instead of .8 bar boost.

However, most that want a turbo want power and the differance between a good intercooler and none is probably a good 50hp for the intercooler alone and another 10% HP from the higher boost you can run.

How does an intercooler add horsepower? I don't understand.

Cooler air is denser therefore more power.

I am not an expert but I suspect if one ran a very efficient turbo and knew what they are doing and they did not run more than about .8 bar on a street car, rant good fuel, and with some tuning they might get away with it. I would be very careful with boost on a hot day.

However, most that want a turbo want power and the difference between a good intercooler and none is probably a good 50hp for the intercooler alone and about another 10% HP from the higher boost you can run. That is a big differance.

I think the guy that ownes that intercooler shown under the black deck lid was trying to sell it as he had his car up for sale.

The methanol injection idea is a good one and there are lots of kits out there. The water/methanol mixture (a myriad of windshield wiper fluid works, just not the kind with glycol in it) acts as as an intercooler through evaporation in the intake tract and is actually more efficient than an air/air IC. Water also acts as a detonation reducer, while the methanol acts as an octane improver so you get a triple whammy benefit of being less knock prone from the water, being less knock prone from the octane bump and getting a cooler intake charge from evaporation. The big downside is adding another consumable liquid and the weight of the fluid/tank to the mix on top of gasoline. Also, if going this route you need a good kit with a failsafe, as you are a clogged sprayer away from a melted motor...the failsafe controls the wastegate in case of failure to reduce boost pressure so you can drive the car home, albeit under reduced power.

Of course, with a little plumbing work to hook up the CIS to the intake manifold, a person could run a 3.3 turbo engine without running any boost. Then, you would just have a dog low compression engine....but you could tell people "it's a turbo" (engine).
