77 930 - add intercooler or not?

engine is out and working top-end rebuild. getting mixed opinions on adding intercooler - anyone know if the reward is worth the work? I have no plans on racing, just want a fun time, part time driver.
thanks

Yes, your engine will thank you. You will have more margin for either greater detonation protection and efficiency or for more horsepower through increased boost. The engineers at Porsche has a good reason to use intercoolers on their racecars and the 1978 Turbo. :)

If you need it to fit under a flat or duck tail, consider a water intercooler or a water/methanol injection system.

infraredcalvin 05-18-2010 07:15 PM

keep the whaletail, fit an intercooler underneath. talk with chris carroll at turbokraft, they are building a few to fit under the early tails - very resonable. look at this thread:

i wish i could do it myself now...

Steven,

A 3.0 turbo is a special car and I would have a hard time putting an intercooler on it or changing it much unless you are just another power nut like the rest of us. They are soon to become a collectible like the early S cars.

One of the advantages of the 3.0 is it can handle higher rpm operation than a 3.3 turbo with its shorter stroke and stronger rods.

My dream would be to build a 3.2 short stroke that runs to 7200rpm or so. I might have EBS in Reno bore the cylinders to 98mm add light weight J&E turbo pistons and wrist pins, set compression to about 8/1, add cams that works well to 7k rpm (Group 'B's?), lower boost to about .5 bar boost, put an efficient exhaust (SSI w M&K Y pipe), a much more efficient turbo for the 5-7,000 rpm range (not a HF) and then drop a lower ring and pinion in it so that with the larger motor and compression can get it off the line well enough in wait for it to come on cam.

I would run light weight Fuchs wheels on it, take some weight out if possible (empty front trunk, light wt battery, lt wt exhaust system, alu Carrera A/C compressor bracket & compressor or remove much of it...) Keep the stock brakes or 3.2 Carrera fronts with good pads.

Should make about 350 chp and weigh about 2600 lbs and drive more like a really fast 2.4S when it comes on cam.

Thanks for letting me dream.

If you can maybe just go from 6.5/1 to 8/1 compression pistons, C2 or Groupe B cams, and open up the intake ports from 32mm to 35mm this time.

Just a thought. :D

add the innercooler, up the boost to 1 bar, check your A/F ratio and have fun.

If you decide to add an intercooler and are interested in using factory parts I have '78/9 Euro CIS system that will be for sale soon. Please email if interested.

Note that a 3.3 intercooler will not work on a 3.0T. There were some Andial / Garrettson IC's built that worked but might be hard to find.

That is why Brian is suggesting the 3.3 take off.

Did you have to say the 77 930 was special. Let's just pretend it is not. Just modify the hell out of it.

Nice, somebody revived this thread. Funny you mention, I've purchased a water meth system and have yet to install. Just got some nice er suspension parts today, so while shes down for that I'll do all at once...

Collectible? Maybe. That's speculation.
The 911S was a better driver, as was every 930 that followed.
Would someone seek out a 1976 over a 1986-88, or 1989? Maybe -- if he's into cars with the most turbo lag ever recorded.

Do what *you* want to it. Don't own it constantly thinking of the next person who'll buy it (unless you're a car dealer). It's your car -- make it yours, and enjoy. That's why they exist.

I'm of the school that the car is an extension of the driver, they should be driven, and driven hard! Besides, there's a bigger flaw that the 911 has that is accepted by all own, and I dont think it hurts collectability at all, the engine is in the wrong place...

Zinger;

Great 930 project, Excellent pics and step by step coverage.
Yes I would do an inter-cooler something in a ~12-16 x 8 x 2.5 or 3" thickness and pipes with a BOV (Forge) expect a 20% increase in overall power and of course paint it Flat Black for best heat dissipation/transfer...
Ebay for under $250 and some custom Pipe Fabrication should put you on top.

Keep us posted...

Turbokraft, I beg to differ. I have a 77 930. Ok, I put a k27 and a 3.3 intake and a Fabspeed intercooler and nice BB headers. I will take on a 3.3 any day. I think that the run and drive just as nice as my friends 85 930.

Oh yea I did change the brakes to a 930 brake system. So I do agree that there are a few improvements. LOL.

Rob

My 77' has no lag, with after market exhaust and dump pipe. I'll be doing water/meth soon!
