930 conversions
This may be a remedial question but here goes. Can any one tell me if if it is possible to place the entire suspension and drive train from a 86 930 under a 74-75 911 chassis?
|
The rear suspention inner mounts are different so it is not a direct bolt up.
|
Yes, But as 911st stated, the rear suspension mounting ears on the torsion tube are raised slightly. Smart Racing sells the tabs to convert to the 930 arms. It is easy if you can weld or have access to a welding shop.
|
The 930 trailing arms are also wider. You must also install flares to accommodate the extra width.
You asked about the entire suspension. The front suspension will bolt up to the chassis. If you are using pre-80 you will need to remove the hub spacer and change the brake hat. If you are using later front suspension you will need to change out the front hubs that have the offset built in. |

I have done it 3-4 times in the last 22 years. The toughest part of the job is to install the rear 930 torsion tube and get it lined up correctly.
I think it is more economical now to buy a 930 and sell the 74. Average prices for a complete turbo suspension is $4-5k ...engine $6k plus ...trans.$2k plus ...flares $800-1,000 plus labor. |

You can cut the center section of the 930 "torsion tube" and cut the 74 "torsion tube" out at the same width and reweld the 930 center section in place.
Or Buy these from smart racing which would be less work 911 Rear Control Arm Pivot Box Upgrade Kits (Using 930 Arms) Part No. 562020 Questions or comments please call 408.369.9997 or FAX 408.369.9741 Smart Racing Products - Home of SmartStrings, SmartCamber, and other quality performance auto parts Overview: The idea is to allow non-turbo cars to be upgraded to use of turbo arms whose pivot has been moved up and back. This reduces acceleration squat tendencies and makes the camber curve characteristics of wider wheels and tires more effective; also allowing a more simplified camber adjustment method. Bump steer curves are more ideal as well. These boxes are also available for standard 911 control arms (part #4001-911). Camber will now be adjusted by raising and lowering the center pivot bolt. This will not affect the toe settings (no more crawling under the car to change camber angles and then readjust toe!) You adjust camber from the inside of the car with 19 and 22mm wrenches. Simple self-aligning and self-fixturing. Note that modification to the back seat area for clearance of these boxes will be necessary. |

I had a 74 chassis with this done to 89 flatnose spec. Accommodation for the longer G50 type gearbox is worth it! The 74 chassis is considerably lighter. Adding the proper torsion tube section and reinforcing the chassis is recommended. Check out this 74 project car for reference if you like. It recently sold to a nice guy who got the concept in Florida.
