Help with cause of whiteish smoke (video)

Heads are newish worked by ollies installed myself. Rings are newish installed by me. Newish means less than 10k miles. New turbo last weekend. Failed MOT a week ago so I installed the new holset hx40 I had as spare. New plugs and repaired a tear in the IC. Switched to E85.

While cruising a hint of burning oil but no smoke screen even at WOT, only when idling and sudden press of pedal and smoke puf after couple of days garage which points to combustion chamber.

One option is water steam from rich E85!

Usually smoke on acceleration would be the rings. did you have the cylinders honed before installing the new rings?

IIRC I used a DIY drill bit. Also no smoke from oil tank on idle and oil stick just touches oil.

Was it happening before you put the new turbo on?

If not, maybe a seal is bad in the turbo allowing oil to get into the intake.

I’m no expert just tossing an idea up on the board.

Good luck

Did you use the small balls on a wire tree? (Sorry I can't remember the correct name)
I understand that these are not ideal and can put a finish that is to rough (Ra number).
There was a thread in the engine rebuilding forum recently about using Scotchbrite pads (red) instead.

It was some pads like stone or similar. The other turbo was very oily and even idle had some blueish smoke—> failed MOT.

Check to see if you have oil where the turbo to muffler bolt up, after idling for a while. Remove muffler and look for oil deposit. Could indicate leaking turbo seals.

If the old turbo oil seals were leaking bad enough it could’ve filled up the exhaust with oil and it takes considerable time for all of it to burn out.
Pull the muffler off and see if any there’s any oil in it. If so than clean it out the best you can, put it back on and drive the snot out of the car and unfortunately it may smoke for a bit until it all burns out.
Good luck and keep us updated

I have zork now with the new turbo. Today I TRIED MOT again and failed miserably with 3000HC

I even got to adjust AFR and timing but nothing lowered the HC. Car idles fine from 12.5 to 16AFR same with timing from -10 to 30, my normal being 12bdtc

I’m looking for a 3in v-band CAT but all seem to be in states and I need one in two weeks.

Today I checked my header temps and one and four are hottest. IIRC 2 and 5 flow most with pancake IM.
Has anyone tested different cyl trims to make idle combustion best. I have only one wideband after turbo so it only shows awerage of six cylinders so even thoug engine seems smooth one or two cylinders might misfire and cause high HC. 3000 to 5000 must be somekind of record for nicely running engine?

I really hope this 100 cell metal cat helps along with bigger plug gaps

HC was now under 80 so this will be my future MOT kit.

Im not sure of the longevity of these metal 100 cats with our rich start ups so I will just remove it now as its not needed for MY79. It cost me 300€ and it does not seem to affect power much if at all. Put back my two port MBC and with luck my first adjustment was perfect: 2nd gear .9 bar, 3rd gear 1.1 bar.

That’s a huge improvement. Did it also clear up the smoke shown in the video?

As it doesn't smoke anywhere driving I assume it will not smoke on idle pedal pump either but I have not tested it. I switched back to scavenge pump, put a restrictor on input line, installed new turbo so lots of changes (plus that cat) and I think all of them helped but the restrictor IMO was the biggest help on the new turbo smoking. The previous Holset had the same restrictor and still smoked but with gravity output to sump.
