Drop engine for valve adjustment?

What's you opinion, do i need a engine drop to adjust the valves?
I hear a valve ticking only when the engine is warm,so whats the best choice?

The lowers (exhaust) are easy to do in the car, but I have a hard time with the upper (intake). If you have anything else you want to do the engine, taking it out might be better.

Wooah there, no need to go through all of the trouble of dropping the engine unless you have to for other reasons. Just remove the stuff in the way and do it in the car.

I always remove the rear motor mount bolts and lower it down about 6 inches. Makes it real easy to adjust the intakes from under the car. 6 inches is enough that you dont have to unhook anything but the ac compressor.

To me it's a PITA with the engine in, and an equal PITA to completely remove the engine...but so much easier with the engine out, obviously. Agreed, though, just drop the rear down about 6 inches and it gives enough room to do the job. Speaking of which, it's time once again for me.

Nope, I never do. You don't have to either. A couple of the cylinders can be difficult to get to in the car but you can do it. Want to make it even easier? Learn the backside method and it is a breeze! Seriously..... Done mine a couple times now in the car without a partial drop either. Good Luck!

Bill is right on with the backside method much, much easier and you seem to get a more consistent adjustment.

My arms will not fit down the drivers side to be able to reach all the cylinders. So I dont have any choice.

I've yet to try it...but will next time. Seems to make good logical sense.
Maybe we need to make modified feelers with an extension handle brazed on or some such Rube Goldberg adaptation.

No problem guys. I didn't come up with the method just use it and think it works great. I agree that the feelers are to short so what I do is get a couple of these to help with that. It comes apart so you don't have to handle the whole thing..

I never drop the motor on a 930 to adjust the valves. I remove the stuff in the way and adjust them in the car. Driver side intake are the only tough ones. I can do the whole adjustment top and bottom in about 1 1/2 hours.

This is really good to hear as I'm in the process as well. Also fixing leaking oil return tubes and leaking valve cover gaskets on a '79. I started this weekend, have very little mechanical experience and have been posting my progress on Rennlist. In the next few days I will be posting the thread here as well. Just haven't had time to make that happen yet.

Wanted to be sure I was going to follow through on the project as I have a tendency to get all excited and then fear sets in and I quit before starting. I have almost started this project a few times now. I plan on using the backside method based on reading threads from others especially since I don't have an experience and hence don't have the 'feel'.
