Oil Separator-Turbo (Removal)

Hello to all,

I am looking to investigate this a little further. I have an 87 930 and have an oil separator on my car.

I have spoke to several people that have never had this on there car and others who would like to take this off if possible.

I know a few things for sure:
- There is not oil traveling throughout this system under pressure.
- The Separator's main function is to prevent any oil from getting into the top of the intake (from the hard metal line) in case the pressure were to build up in the tank and overflow and to vent fumes from the crankcase.

I have heard from some that they just have a small K&N air filter on the vent tube just beside the fill cap and the other hose connects to the hard-line going to the intake.

Let's get down and dirty with this one. This is a mess and I want it gone. Can someone please tell me what I will loose if anything when removed?

Thanks for all of your help in advance.

Sincerely, a confused P-car owner.

Bryan

Some folks have actually added that system to their pre-seperator engines. I would think that if you track the car a system like that may be a good thing. Personally I have never had issue with my simplistic setup but I do not track the car much. When I do track the car I reduce the oil level to less that 1/2 on the dipstick to allow for corning forces and system growth due to presure and heat.

To directly answer your question, you will lose the ability to capture puked oil should that event occur.

Thanks for the info.

To help, I do not and never will track the car. My brother "turbobrat930" has tracked his car on numerous occasions and never had this problem. I'm not sure on his oil level but he can chime in here and show us a picture of his venting option.

Thanks again for the input.

Everyone, keep-em coming.

These parts can easily be put back if you don't like the results. I'd yank 'em out, plug, filter and vent, and see what you think.

Funny how one person's treasure is another person's trash.

I added the oil separator to my 78 930, and I'm glad I did. I didn't feel it added significantly to the clutter. I wanted maximum assurance that I wasn't going to burp a bunch of oil from a vent hose. My EFI engine had no provision for venting to the intake, so I took the vent hose outlet from the separator that is designed to attach to the intake and ran it loosely into the top an empty Mobil 1 oil bottle attached to the firewall at the right corner. The Mobil 1 container acted as a separator for the separator, just in case any oil made it past the factory separator.

One reason I did this mod is because when I dynoed my engine, the tuner used a clear hose from the crankcase vent on the top center of the engine to his vent system (which didn't include an oil separator). Because the engine was stationary and visible, I could watch that hose, and it was amazing how much oil backed up into it. Once I saw how much oil flows through the vent system, I decided I didn't want to take any chance of oil either getting injested by the engine, dropping on the hot engine (for fire/smoke reasons), dropping on the ground, or just fouling my otherwise pristine engine compartment. To me, it was a worthwhile mod with no downsides whatsoever.

During heavy track use, my Mobil 1 bottle never got even a drop of oil. But from prior experience, I suspect that if I'd run the vent hose without that separator, the results would have been different.

I will consider what you have posted Rob 930. Right now I have it in a box.

I would be interested in taking one o f these systems off someones hands for a decent price if they were interested in selling.
I have a 79 930 that does not have this and I would like to update it.
Let me know if you have a whole package in very good shape and how much you would like for it.

Fred
