Unique sound / Custom 930 muffler
I'm always looking for the perfect exhaust note from my 930. I have dreamed up a muffler system, let me know if it's been done. Your thoughts are welcome
I'm not sure what this will accomplish as far as sound. I figure there will be a muffler on each pipe or possibly just on the shorter one. Then maybe I'm just tired and need to close paintshop http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1310952991.jpg |
What is the sound you are looking for? I've tried a bunch of different designs.
|
Brian, Just something more exotic. I do like the deep rumble of the magnaflow but i want something raspier (sp?)
|
are you thinking raspy as in the sound when accelerating with the old Factory Twin pipe sport mufflers?
|
What about chambered mufflers like on the old mid year vettes. Allan's pipes has some that I was looking at. They can be made in many lengths and materials. Not the quality SS that Brian does, but none the less maybe something worth looking at. You may have to go to single outlet though. It would be tight to split it off.

With a turbo you want to stay away from chambers if possible. If a specific sound is required then of course some compromise is a given.
One fairly "raspy" system uses the MagnaFlow X-pattern muffler body, Series 80 if I recall. It is not chambered but the flow is interupted by the X (or y in the case of the 1 in 2 out turbo application). A single out version of this setup would eleminate the turbo whine which I would think is not desirable if you want 911 style raspy. |
I have a straight through muffler 12 inches long that sounds like a 1000cc sportbike that has aftermarket exhaust. It has a 4" perforated pipe internally with packing. I love the way it sounds! Might be from Protomotive but I'm not sure.
Has a deep rumble off boost and a nice, somewhat raspy sound under boost. |
I'm running a MagnaFlow Y style muffler now. It's got a somewhat deep tone but I am looking for something a bit raspy as timc put it.
I thought sticking with smaller diameter twin pipes would give a raspier tone than a single large pipe. Hell, it's only some tubing, a coupler mufflers and some welding. I've wasted more time on lesser things. I'll post my findings |
I'd leave raspy to the small bore high revving guys.
Mine sounds kind of like a big block at idle and a 934 at full throttle. Since this picture was taken I've replaced the 3.5" ID x 4.5" OD x 12" long muffler with a 3.5" ID x 6" OD x 17" long muffler to knock off the noise a little and it still sounds wicked! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311035826.jpg |
Exactly David - that is some serious hardware.
I will have one similar (used the flange you water jet cut for me) that is brand new for sale shortly. Ended up going Turbonetics and making a whole new V-band clamp setup rather than chop up my sweet KKK flanged muffler. |
David, You wouldn't have a sound clip of the car would you?

No, it's on my to do list but then it has been since I forgot to film it on the dyno years ago. |
Nobody worries about passing emissions? I don't see a cat anywhere although I do like David's set up.

My car sounds kind of raspy compared to other 930s. I don't really know why. It sounded raspy with the original USA exhaust and still sounds raspy with the upgraded system (SSIs and rarlyl8 muffler). The only thing I can think of is that the primaries are smallish (both on the original set up and SSIs) compared to others I've seen. <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FVAT9rFns5Y?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FVAT9rFns5Y?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></object> |
And being 79s, they are older than the 25 year mark making them immune to emissions testing (at least in Georgia). Just saying I'd like to see a car with a cat, something for us "younger" cars to look at.

jwasbury - that sounds great
|
I'm watching the DVD Moby and The Warehorse Gang right now and its shocking too me how close to 935s my 930 sounds... I have a K27 with one of Brian's single exit exhausts.

Nice note!
